Performance of the Week
P Dave Taylor - The 25 year old year was a 2nd round pick by Baltimore in 2026 but like almost everyone else on the Rum Runners roster came to town via trade. On July 2nd against Pawtucket he threw eight innings, allowed two hits, walked none and struck out nine in a 7-0 victory. On the season he's 6-0 with a 2.23 ERA and a 2.2 WAR.
Injury of the Week
P Dave Teel - In another injury to the Freedom staff Teel made it five innings against Seattle on July 30th before being pulled due to an injury. A bone spur was found in his elbow and he looks to be out for several months. The 37 year old signed a two year contract this past off-season after leaving the Pilots and was 6-5 with a 3.13 ERA and 2.9 WAR this season. In the end though the clubhouse rallied around his injury and Johnny Berry hit a two out, two run double in the bottom of the 9th to beat Seattle 5-4.
Prospect of the Week
P Kevin Clayton - The #1 prospect in all of baseball happens to be a reliever, but a possible future perennial All-Star one. The 4th round pick in 2027 by Montreal was traded to Syracuse in 2030 and has been dominant since playing for AAA New York. This season in 35 games he is 3-3 with 17 saves, a 1.96 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP. He's still working on his control but his 100 mph fastball is just filthy.
Five Things We Think We Think
1. The record is tied! On July 30th in New York the Denver BC were down 6-2 in the 9th before closing the gap to 6-5 with one out. Jamie O'Hearn was called to pinch hit and on a 2-0 count smashed the ball 369 feet over the fence to tie the game. Denver won in the 10th when they scored three more on a shocked New York squad. O'Hearn now has 572 career home runs, tied with Dani Alvarez for 1st all-time. Denver has seven in a row this upcoming week in LA and then Seattle before heading home. On the year O'Hearn is hitting .264 with 14 home runs.
2. A lot was made by the Miami press this year when the team that won 102 games last season had almost the worst record in the league at the start of June. After an 9-19 May a few player only meetings sparked something and the Sharks have come alive. In their last 30 games they have the best record in the BLB and are 21-9 with a run differential of +32. They are now also 1.5 games back from the 4th wildcard spot in the DL.
3. The IL has their own turnaround team as Los Angeles is 20-10 over their last 30 games and is 1.5 games behind Batavia for the 4th wildcard spot in the IL. After an 8-19 May they were given up for dead as well by the local press. With Robby Brooksher leading the team with a .298 average, 20 HR's and 50 RBI's this is a legit playoff team.
4. Edgar de Alba of Syracuse and Dave Short of Maine have both started 16 games this year. De Alba is 3-9 with a 5.26 ERA and has given up a league leading 25 home runs. Short is 9-2 with a 1.55 ERA and has given up a league low four home runs. Last season de Alba and Short both gave up 27 home runs.
5. Our two series of the week are Denver at Seattle and Philly at Washington. These are the 1-2 match ups in the Bock and Stout and should be good ones. So far these teams have each met in nine games with Seattle and Washington both holding a 6-3 advantage.
