  • The 2031 Daily Keg - Week 12

    (AP)

The Bats pass up Montreal by going 4-2 this week as Hartford falls from #1 to #4 with a 1-5 week after getting swept by Maine and losing two of three to New Orleans. The two best records of the week though belong to Carolina and Toronto who both went 5-1, we should just let them play for the Brewmaster's Cup now! The team leaders for the week: Seattle with 15 HR's, Montreal with 16 runs allowed, Carolina scored 40 runs, Denver's pitching struck out 50.

    Performance of the Week

P Manabu Hamada - The perfect one moved to 9-0 this year with a gem on June 24th against Windy City. In eight innings he allowed zero runs, two hits, walked one, and struck out 11 in a 5-0 victory. On the season Hamada has a 2.36 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, and 3.0 WAR. The 29 year old from Japan also has a 14 game winning streak going, the longest in the BLB.

    Injury of the Week

P Pat 'Nasty' Payton - The 35 year old is in his first full season with Miami after coming over from Carolina last season via trade. Against Pittsburgh on June 27th he gave up a single to start the game against RJ Kapper, gave up a double to Robby Lee, then left the game cradling his right arm. Tests later showed a torn labrum and he will be out for at least six months. On the season he was 5-4 with a 4.06 ERA but was 3-0 in June and one of the reasons Miami has climbed out of the basement into the playoff picture.

    Prospect of the Week

3B Pat 'Melody' Nunes - The 22 year old was 2nd overall pick in the 2026 draft by Phoenix and is currently the #4 prospect in all of baseball while playing for the Road Runners AA team. He was held in A ball for five seasons but finally moved up and is hitting .289/.377/.434 with 6 HR's and 33 RBI's in 65 games so far this season. Scouts are a little worried about his work ethic and intelligence but if he gets close to his potential he will be a middle of the lineup hitter for years.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. There has been a lot of fighting this month in the BLB and the commissioners office is cracking down. First on June 14th Carolina short stop Jon Santiago and Denver pitcher Enrique Bernardi started a brawl after Santiago got beaned. Then on June 21st Toronto pitcher Pat Green beaned Indianapolis first basemen Jermaine Williams which started a fight. Then finally on June 28th Seattle pitcher Joey Seymour beaned New York first basemen TJ Preddy which started a bench clearing brawl. This last incident both parties were suspended six games and afterwords George Bush sent out a strongly worded memo that the next suspensions will be even higher.

    2. We missed it a few weeks ago but congrats to Dylan Owens for hitting home run number 400. The bigger story though is Jamie O'Hearn of Denver has hit six home runs this month and now has 571 on his career, one away from tying the all-time record of 572 set by Dani Alvarez. Unfortunately for Denver fans the BC are just starting out on a 13 game road trip today. Fortunate though for the fans of New York, California, LA, and Seattle who will have a chance to see BLB history tied and broken.

    3. Phoenix had a big waiver wire pickup this past week when they claimed Jamie Kitchen from Denver. 'Superfly' is about to turn 32 and has had a pretty rough road when it comes to injuries, but he is the all-time leader in triples and will put fans in the seats. We think he could come in and start at DH this week.

    4. With the month of June winding down which teams had big months? Philadelphia is 18-8, Montreal is 18-9, LAD and Miami both are 17-10, while New York is 16-9 and Pittsburgh is 16-11. Player wise Jimmy Jeffs (SEA) hit .374 with 11 HR's, Ricky Figueroa (DEN) stole 14 bases, Josh Wright (NYK) had an OPS of 1.465, Brendan Gautier (LAD) was 4-0 with a 2.65 ERA, and Alex Dominguez (PHI) threw two complete games.

    5. For those who didn't see it an old photo of the BLB's 1st commissioner was recently found which shows J. Allen Wright wearing the 1923 DL All-Star uniforms. Meanwhile Jimmy Jeffs and Ian James continue to lead their respective leagues in All-Star votes. The game will be played July 22nd at 7:05 PM EST.
