Performance of the Week
P Dave Short - On April 27th against Montreal the 28 year old pitched a one hit shutout with 10 strike outs and no walks. The solo hit was a single by Jamie Bisbee in the bottom of the 4th. On the season Short is 2-0 with a 1.73 ERA. After finishing 2nd in the 2029 Pale Ale race he was 13-7 with a 4.47 ERA last season. As of now the Maine organization and fans have to be thrilled by this start.
Injury of the Week
P Tyrese 'River' Carter - It was a not a good day on April 26th for the Freedom. First Jamie Stone left the game with a hand injury. A few innings later in the 9th Carter came in and got two outs before grabbing his left shoulder and leaving the game as well. The MRI later showed a torn rotator cuff, the second of his career. After consulting several doctors 'River' decided that at the age of 24 he was going to hang up the glove. He was a 2nd round pick in 2027 who was picked up by Philly in the dispersal draft later that season. Always considered a great teammate he will be missed in the clubhouse and will be returning to Georgia, where he grew up, to live with his wife and young daughter.
Prospect of the Week
CF Rory Elia - The 17 year old from Florida has power for days. In three high school seasons he's hit 52 home runs and drove in an amazing 124 runs. The all-time leader though is Dave Shelter who was picked 1.21 by Seattle in 2028. He hit 81 in three seasons, with 41 of them coming in 2028...in only 40 games. That's simply amazing.
Five Things We Think We Think
1. Another brawl marred the BLB this week. On April 27th Pittsburgh and New Orleans squared off, literally. In the bottom of the 1st the Millers scored twice off Jimmy Maggio, the second coming off a solo shot by Ron Snider. Jayden Copeland came up next and drew three straight balls before Maggio got it back to a full count. The next pitch was just a bit inside and hit Copeland in the back. He slowly started to walk towards first before throwing his bat at Maggio and charging the mound. Somehow the office of the commissioner only gave him a four game suspension while giving Maggio eight games.
2. The Dino's are slugging away, led by Robby Brooksher who has won IL Player of the Week the last two weeks. They have hit 29 home runs and their team OPS is .823, both the best in the BLB. Unfortunately their team ERA is 5.29, 2nd worst in the league, and they sit at 8-10 and 4th place in the Bock.
3. Against our editors wishes Turell 'Two Ton' Morris has hit 11 HR's and is on pace for 99 on the season. He now has 148 in his BLB career but he's already 28 years old after being held in the Kansas City farm system until he was 24. He might be too far behind the curve to ever challenge for the all-time record but if he hits 60 a year for the next few years he might make things interesting.
4. Dusty Orbon of the Windy City Blues went down with a strained hammy this past week and will be on the bench for over a month. He's the 2nd highest paid player in the league as he is raking in $33 million this season. In 2027 he signed a four year, $132 million contract with the Blues that was one of the richest in BLB history. He started 32 and 32 games in back to back seasons before the catastrophic shoulder injury took away his entire 2030 season. He's now 0-1 this year with a 6.00 ERA in three starts.
5. There are 284 pitchers in the BLB, only one of them throws a knuckleball. Say hello to 25 year old Washington Bats starter Pat Arballo. He was originally drafted by Death Valley back in 2022 and now teams with Dave Theisen to form the best young 1-2 combo in the league.
