Performance of the Week
1B Turell 'Two Ton' Morris - When you overshadow a perfect game you had a heck of a day, and Turell Morris had just that. On August 24th Morris had five hits, two home runs, drove in seven runs, and helped Maine come back and beat Pittsburgh 11-7. The even bigger story though is that his 1st home run tied the single season home run record and his 2nd, which came in the 7th set the record in front of almost 43,000 who were already on their feet anticipating history. On the year Morris is hitting .344 with 59 HR's and 146 RBI's.
Injury of the Week
P Joey 'Beanpole' Kopp - Beanpole signed with New York this offseason hoping to get another shot at a title. He pitched one game in April where he made it 2.1 innings before going down with a ruptured tendon in his finger that took five months to heal. He came back on on August 21st made it 2.1 innings again before hurting his shoulder. He was diagnosed with tendinitis and will be out for over a month. For $17 million he's pitched 4.2 innings this season with a 3.86 ERA.
Prospect of the Week
2B Dusty Elmore - In his first season in the CCBL the 20 year old for Chatham hit .383 this season with 6 HR's and 35 HR's. Scouts say he's "relaxed and confident. Aggressive when needed."
Five Things We Think We Think
1. Jamie Stone was our performer of the week just a week ago and he topped it this week with a perfect game on August 23rd against Washington. Nine innings, zero hits, zero walks, seven strikeouts. In only 95 pitches he threw 62 strikes and had 10 ground outs and 10 fly outs. On the year Stone is 12-6 with a 3.05 ERA. The last perfect game was Pat Kaufman when he tossed one for Death Valley against Davenport in 2023.
2. Since July 1st, California is 29-18 and at 61-62 are now only 3 back from Denver in the IL wildcard race for the last spot. As mentioned though their month of September is going to tough as they play against some of the best teams in the BLB. If they somehow make the playoffs no one wi
3. Maine now has a run differential of +280. Seattle is second at +217. Maine has scored 698 runs with the record in a season belonging to the 1989 Guides who scored 972. On a side not the Guides are the only team this season with 0 sacrifice hits, the average is 24.
4. September callups will be coming up next week. A few of the names we'd like to see. JJ Christopher of Wilminton (.314, 10 HR's, 36 SB's). Dusty Kocurek of New Orleans (.311, 14 HR's, 70 RBI's). Ed Pugh of Batavia (.313, 11 HR's, 68 RBI's). Finally Al Kelly, who's been held hostage is Washington's AAA all year and has hit 40 home runs down there.
5. Once again hats off to Two Ton Morris who set the single season record for home runs, should set the single season record for runs batted in, and has a great chance to set the single season record for runs. In the BLB's 40+ season history we've never seen anything like this and it has been a pleasure to watch.
