  • The 2030 Daily Keg - Week 14

    (AP)

The Pilots are back on top of the power rankings as they go 5-2 this week while the Guides go 4-3. Right now it looks like the BLB is on pace for another 2028 title game between Seattle and Maine as those teams lead the league with 61 and 60 wins respectively. The Freedom though had the best week going 6-1 with a four game sweep of Carolina as several players appear to be on hot streaks. Speaking of the Tobs they are running away with the race to #1 (draft pick that is) by going 0-7. Their pitching ERA was below the week average but they only scored 15 runs in those seven games.

    Power Rankings

    1) Seattle Pilots (129.4, +)
    2) Maine Guides (121.3, -)

    23) Batavia Red Jackets (63.7, o)
    24) Carolina Tobs (35.1, o)

    Performance of the Week

1B Jaime Middaugh, CAL - The 25 year old posted the third highest ranked batting performance this season when on July 10th he cycled against the Phoenix Roadrunners with five hits, two home runs, and four runs batted in during a 8-0 victory. On the season Middaugh is hitting .318 with 12 HR's and 36 RBI's.

    Injury of the Week

CF Riley Thomas, CAL - In the all west coast edition of the Daily Keg Thomas fell victim running down a Dave Schwab fly ball in the 6th inning of the July 11th game against Phoenix. He was replaced immediately at center and x-rays showed his left thumb wasn't broken, just severely sprained, and he should be day to day for several weeks. On the season he is hitting .300 with 13 HR's and 54 RBI's.

    Prospect of the Week

2B Donte 'Stocky' Kim, WAS - Kim was signed this week out of North Korea by the Bats after getting a $5 million dollar signing bonus, most of which was used to sneak him out of the country. He is one of nine players in the BLB universe from North Korea. Scouts say he has above average contact potential, is extremely intelligent, and "doesn't just listen but takes notes."

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. Jamie O'Hearn was inserted back into the lineup a few weeks ago after a high ankle sprain kept him out for over a month. This past week he hit four home runs and scored his 1500th career run. He is fifth on the career leader board for career home runs with 545. TJ Dunn is 4th with 548, Rex Knight is 3rd with 555 and Mel Woodbury is 2nd with 561. The man on top is Dani Alvarez with 572 and that 27 home run difference might be too much for the now fragile O'Hearn to catch.

    2. Hideki Nakayama has been on quite a roll lately. We talked last week about the seven game suspension he got after a bench clearing brawl against New York on June 29th. He was reinstated July 8th and lasted to July 11 when he was involved in another huge bench clearing brawl against LAD. After another Jimmy Edge home run in the 3rd he was hit by a pitch, but this time it was on the 8th pitch of the at bat. He charged the mound and "all hell broke loose". The commissioners office was not pleased to say the least and this time he was suspended for 10 games. For a clubhouse leader to be suspended for over 10% of the season due to fighting is definitely not a good example for the rest of the team.

    3. With the Ale and Bock already decided anybody looking for a good playoff race is going to have to tune into the Lager and Stout for some action. In the Lager Miami and Montreal are only 1.5 games apart while in the Stout Washington and Baltimore are 6 games apart. Baltimore was a lot closer come July 1st but after going 3-9 so far this month they are slipping back. The wildcard races could also be interesting, especially in the Domestic League where almost every team is still in it. Even Toronto, with the worst record in the DL at 35-54 is only 7.5 games back from the final wildcard spot that New Orleans holds with a 42-46 record.

    4. Speaking of Baltimore and Washington they kick off a three game series this week on July 19th. So far the season series is led by the Bats 5-4 with nine more games (counting this series) to go. In the games so far Gil Banda (.444), Tom Clark (.457) and Bruno Damours (.378) have hurt the Bats the most and Baltimore needs these guys to step up so the division doesn't get out of reach before the All-Star break. Washington though is throwing Pat Arballo (2.56 ERA) in game one and Tomio Ono (2.78 ERA) in game three and would love to demoralize the Bulldogs at home.

    5. The All-Star break kicks off a week from today and the game will be featured in sunny Miami. In no surprise Johnny Swope leads the IL in voting while Turell Morris leads the DL. We will talk more about this in next week's edition and include the 2030 All-Star game official logo that will be revealed.

At the current pace, this is the third season in a row that Seattle and Maine will be the #1 seeds. New York proved anything can happen when you get there but the Guides and Pilots are at the top of their game right now.

It will be interesting to see what happens to those two teams over the 2nd half of the season and the next few years. Both have had their share of injuries already and both teams have a few fragile players. Going forward, the Guides have two of their biggest stars OF Akiyuki Kimura and DH Terrell Morris ready to opt out. In Seattle, Dave Teel is a free-agent, Mr. Suspension Nakayama has an opt out, and SP "Freeze" Shuai is on the books for $44M.

I don't know, as long as O'Hearn gets to play, I see him catching Dani Alvarez. It might be close though and he needs to DH.
