Performance of the Week
LF Jamie Pilgrim, CHI - For a career .254 hitter he sure hammered California on April 23rd. In four at bats he had two home runs, drove in six runs, and scored twice himself. His grand slam in the 8th put the game out of reach for the Kodiaks and sent the fans into a beer guzzling frenzy.
Injury of the Week
SP DJ Engstrom, TOR - We have sources that the fan favorite known as 'The Brick' is teetering on calling it a career. After starting at least 28 games for 14 straight season he had one start last season before having to have elbow ligament reconstruction surgery. Toronto signed him this off-season and after four starts (and a 8.64 ERA) he was diagnosed with bone chips in that same elbow after getting Ron Barnill to fly out to start the 5th against Indy. He's looking at being out at least 6-7 weeks if he decides to come back. He is the all-time leader in K's with a total of 3589, more than 500 more than current 2nd place holder Dave Teel.
Prospect of the Week
1B Fitzpatrick Fisher, MIA - At 19 years old this kid can slug with the best of them. Last year he hit 23 home runs in 50 games, this year he has hit 24 already in 39 games. His slugging percentage is .902 and scouts say he "adapts well and should find a fit in most organizations."
Five Things We Think We Think
1. A blur on the base-paths. Miami stole 14 bases this week, and only got caught once. The fastest 1B in the game Geoff Daily had 7 while CF CJ Glassberg had 6. They are tied with Baltimore with 25 on the year. On the flip side Hartford has 3 stolen bases on the entire season. Hartford is 10-9. Miami is 9-10.
2. On April 25th Pawtucket 1B Fred Ratley smashed a double and hurt his knee running into 2nd. He was diagnosed with a sprained knee and will be out for over a month. This was Ratley's sixth hit in seven at bats this week and without playing again he was still awarded the DL Player of the Week award.
3. Maine loves drama this year. Against Syracuse on April 24th they allowed the Snappers to hit a solo home run in the top of the 12th to make it 4-3. Tom Antonietti then walked. Kimura then hit a single. Turell Morris then hit a sacrifice fly to tie it. Jamie Kitchen then won it with a walk off 340 foot home run
4. Wes Perry is now 3-0 this season in five starts with a 1.75 ERA. He's won 23 in a row and is undefeated in his last 27 starts. The record is 36 by Martin 'Eager Beaver' Carlton who was a reliever with sporadic starts until 1988 when Washington made him a starter and he went 21-1.
5. Speaking of milestones and records. Mike Morla reached 2500 hits this week and is 2nd all-time among active players since Geoff Yankee and Jimmy Douglas haven't had an at bat this season. At 34 years old he's now only 1000 behind all-time leader Steve Suarez.
