Pittsburgh, Pa.
In a stunning twist, the Millers have fired manager Jerry Russell, effective immediately.
The long time manager began in the Pittsburgh organization in 2012 where he was hired as the manager in A Reading. 2013 Russell became Lonnie Hyde's bench coach before taking over in 2014 as the team's Manager.
Under Russell's leadership, the Millers went 869 and 671, and in his 9 seasons (prior to this one) made it to the playoffs 7 times.
"The time has come where we needed a change. We thank Jerry for his decade of contributions to the Pittsburgh Millers and wish him the best of luck moving forward." Millers brass said in a released statement.
There has been rumors of a change two seasons ago, and finally it has happened.
Taking over as Millers manager is bench coach Zach Chandler. Chandler has served as the Millers bench coach since 2014, and was a former infielder was a player for the Millers during the 2002 and 2003 seasons.
"Sometimes you have to prove you can win the big one. There have been countless opportunities to show that and Jerry has failed to deliver. Either you can handle the moment or you can't." An anyomous player said.
While the act itself is surprising, the timing is not. After a league investigation into the management structure of the Millers, sources have confirmed that general Manager Mike C could be next on the chopping block. The league office is growing tired with his antics, and there have been rumblings that they could be guiding his regime toward the exit.
"This could end ugly for the front office. I wonder how long before there's another set of moves. There could be significant changes this offseason, and I'm not talking about the players." Our source said via text. "Mike's days are numbered, it'll come down to whether he falls on the sword himself or if the league takes him behind the woodshed.
And so it goes, no matter how much success you have in Pittsburgh, there's always drama that will follow. This time is Russell, anyone could be next.
