  • 12 First Round Picks

Seeing Stoltenberg suck ass in A ball got me thinking about my mediocre first round drafting in my short BLB career...

2014 First pick ever... panicked and grabbed a hitter
1.8 Garrek Finn - 6.0 WAR (Oops! Erik Jackson - had Jaime at that point and D.J. Gosser immediately followed)

2015 Traded out of the first round with Maine (actually looked smart Joey Long - 2.1 WAR and Ted Adamo 1.7 WAR were my targets)

2016 This should have set up my team for years to come... Oops!
1.1 Mike Morla - 33.7 WAR (seems okay, but wasted the rest of the draft)
1.8 Nelson Marquez - 0.1 WAR (REALLY WANTED HEALEY, but should've grabbed (if memory serves) the next player on my board Sedevic - 22.0 WAR or the top pitcher on my board Villaseur 22.3 WAR)
1.17 Zack Thomas - 2.2 WAR (missed on 1B Colgate and Frederick that went later... Yikes!)

2017 Screw it, all pitchers this round...
1.18 Dave Morlan - 0.0 WAR (looked like a stud reliever, but retired... WTF?!)
1.23 J.D. Colovos - 3.0 WAR (traded to get Wilkinson... worked out so far)
1.24 Sylvian Brouwer - 8.7 WAR (best starter the last two years, but this year... a mess)

2018 1.3 Ron Hillert - 1.8 WAR (looking like a bust at this point, but still young... Tommy Hornung went right after)

2019 1.3 Dan Bradford - 5.6 WAR (Looking like the best pitcher of the draft so far... First good pick in a while!)

2020 1.12 Garrett Pfeifer - 0.0 WAR (Underwhelming in AAA, but great A and AA stats... really liked the three catchers that went later, but that Hiller would be a stud... Oops!)

2021 1.16 Tom Stoltenberg - 0.0 WAR (looking like a steaming pile of crap in second year of A ball)

2022 1.25 Pat Flume - 0.0 (still too early to tell, but again a first round pick found nowhere near the top 100 Prospect list)

Looking over my first twelve first round picks, it seems like a lot more misses than hits... It also makes me wonder why I continue to treat my first round picks like gold...

You're being really dismissive of how good some of these guys are, especially for where they were drafted. You can't expect to get 24 year old All-Stars picking in the back half of the first round.

Finn was ravaged by injuries. Not your fault. He was hitting .319 with an .889 OPS when he got hurt in 2018 and .292 with an .834 OPS when he got hurt in 2020.

    You got Morla.

Marquez was a good pick. The error there was in player development. You rushed him. You promoted him to AA when he was batting .160 at single-A. He took a nose dive after that.

Thomas was fine. He is fine. He won a Rookie of the Month award last year. Getting a starting position player with the 17th pick is doing just fine.

Colovos has a 2.76 ERA in 41 BLB starts. He's good. Hell of a job drafting at #23.

Brouwer's also been good for you. Colovos and Brouwer back to back with picks 23 and 24 is a coup.

Hillert is 24 years old. He's been worth about 2 WAR over a full season of playing time. That's solid. Give him time.

    Bradford is obviously good.

That was the year I blew both my firsts on starting pitchers who won't end up doing anything in the majors.

Pat was right about Duell's control not coming along. I since learned and internalized that lesson. Bad pick.

Clauss I still think was a good pick. He had just made the AA All-Star game in 2018 as a 22 year old and had a 1.65 ERA in three AAA starts before he blew out his shoulder. He missed a full 12 months of baseball and was never close to the same pitcher again.

Funny. I forgot about that write-up and I've recently been thinking about Duell as a future Reyna on my team. And that's exactly who Pat compared him to.

Ichikawa is a very good 2B. Pelloni does have a future at 2B.

              Good job Pat.

I actually remember that C+. That hurt reading that at the time.

Good points Z! Perhaps I expect too much too soon, after seeing Filar, Wescott. and Morla get so good, so quickly in my first few years.

This is the one I may regret. Trading for Wilkinson has worked out great for California, but I remember going back and forth on which prospects to send.

I think I first gave it an "F" but decided to take it easy on the new guy.

it's an even better write up when you compare how the selected players are doing now.
