  • September Surprises?

Who has stood out since being called up? Who exceeded expectations? For rebuilding clubs, did anyone earn themselves a Spring Training invite? Or maybe even a guarantee for the Opening Day roster?

Now that we have changed the Playoff Roster Eligibility to the entire 40 man, September has now become a "try out" for the team contenders field in the post-season. Was there someone that forced their way onto the roster? Any big surprises?

For Seattle, there have been three that are in contention to make the 25 man for October:

    1 - CF Tom Herlein - http://www.simgamingnetwork.com/blb/...ayer_4469.html
Small, small sample, but he might have just won the starting CF job in Seattle in just 37 ABs. After hitting .301 with a .800 OPS in Triple-A, I figured I'd give him a call. The 25-year-old was called up to provide a defensive replacement in LF, along with a descent PH/PR option. After J.R. Lowe went down for the season, the position was up for grabs and after Dave Miller and Zach Bromley did nothing to excite, the job is Herlein's.

    2 - SP/RP Jamie Coffman - http://www.simgamingnetwork.com/blb/...ayer_5257.html
I'm not sure if he will crack the rotation or be in the bullpen but Coffman has done enough in September to deserve consideration. In five games, one start, Coffman has yet to give up a run in 11.1 IP and has three wins. His 68% groundball has worked well with the Pilots infield defense.

    3 - RP J.D. 'Animal' Helton - http://www.simgamingnetwork.com/blb/...ayer_7006.html
Probably a long shot, but Helton has flourished in a RH-specialist role. In eight games, he has struck out five in 2.1 innings. His 101MPH velocity has proven too much for righties.

    Seattle Pilots- 2017-2041
    Washington Bats - 1979-2013

If our boys get their heads out of their asses and decide to play well enough for us to make the playoffs, one guy who gets to hop on the plane will be Pat Bryan (2B).

He probably should be added as our Minor Leaguer of the Year. After a stellar minor league campaign, the kid has hit .417 in 12 AB with two doubles, an RBI and 2 stolen bases in September.

No matter what happens this season, I fully expect the young man with two first names to play his way into the everyday starting role at second base sometime in 2018.

That 2016 draft was so much better than the 2017. Bryan probably would have been a 1st.
