Dukes Shut out by Romey: A pitcher's main job is to keep the opposition off the scoreboard and Hartford pitcher Ethan Romey did just that today in a 10-0 victory over the New Orleans Dukes at Henry Byrd Field. He gave up no runs in his start, permitted 3 hits and had 6 strikeouts.


Dowling Goes 5-for-6: Damian Dowling really sizzled at the plate today. In a game played at Henry Byrd Field, the Hartford shortstop blistered the New Orleans Dukes for 5 hits in 6 at-bats to pace his club to a 10-0 victory. "Dowling was too tough to get out today," the Dukes skipper said in his postgame interview. "No matter what we threw him, he hit it. And he hit some good pitches, too." Damian Dowling singled in the 1st, doubled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, hit a two-run triple in the 6th, singled in the 7th and grounded out in the 9th.

This year Dowling is batting .300 with 80 hits, 4 home runs, 29 RBIs, 6 walks, .326 OBP and has scored 27 runs.


Burton Holds Canadians Scoreless: Ron Burton of the Indianapolis Clowns was firing on all cylinders against the Toronto Canadians. He blanked them 4-0 on 3 hits and posted 9 strikeouts and 1 walk.

So far this season Burton has a 3-7 record, 13 starts, 79.1 innings, 63 strikeouts and a 3.74 ERA.

Injury Takes Toll, Danny Romero Out: Watching Danny Romero getting helped off the field today at Dallas Sea Life Aquarium, fans of the Dallas Sharks feared the worst. The news wasn't quite as bad as initially feared, but the second baseman will miss 4 weeks with an oblique strain. "We feel we've dodged a bullet. When you see a guy break down like that, you worry right away," a team spokesman said. Romero suffered the injury colliding with a player at a base in the game against the Dinos.

This year Romero has hit at a .294 clip with 52 hits, 2 home runs, 24 RBIs and 20 runs scored.


Star 1B Gamboa Settles on Batavia: Rumors of a deal between David Gamboa and Batavia finally bore fruit today as the two sides faced a packed press corps. Muckdogs officials looked very pleased as they outlined the terms of the new deal.

Gamboa will earn $5,000,000 per year for 1 year, and is expected to make a solid addition to his new club.


Bang-up Game: Ledbetter Slams 3 Homers: Three home runs in a game doesn't happen often. When it does it is usually something special to celebrate. But Ian Ledbetter of Carolina couldn't really celebrate it. In spite of his career day, the Tobs lost to the Muckdogs 14-5. However, he can celebrate that he joined a select group of players who have hit three home runs in a single game. He powered three into the stands today against the Batavia Muckdogs.

In all he was 3-for-4 against Batavia with 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored.

Ledbetter told reporters after the game, "It's rare that you actually try to hit a home run. Most of the time you fail, if you really try to hit one. But today I tried on the last one."

His manager added, "He is blessed with a natural home run swing. He gets the ball up in the air real quickly. It's just a shame we couldn't win the game, too. I'm sure it spoils the day a little for him. Ian is quite a competitor."

Ian Ledbetter hit a two-run home run off Victor Vasquez in the 1st, hit a solo-shot off Victor Vasquez in the 3rd, flied out in the 5th and hit a solo-shot off Pat Zabriskie in the 8th.

This year Ledbetter is hitting .283, produced 37 RBIs and 16 home runs, scored 39 times and gotten on base at a .337 rate.


Hit #2000 for Guides Rosema: Jimmy Rosema, welcome to the club -- the 2000-hit club.

The Maine designated hitter gained membership in that elite group in a 6-2 victory over the Toronto Canadians at Toronto Stadium.

3 hits in 5 at-bats today enabled the Guides star to reach the milestone.

Rosema has a lifetime .319 average with 2002 hits, 392 doubles, 67 triples, 51 home runs and 603 RBIs to date.
