  • BLB '14 Draft in Review

The 2014 BLB draft is now just another tab in the history of the league. All though it's early, and we all know prospects boom and bust, this is an overview on the draft and who we might be hearing from in the next decade.

    1.1 - 1B Dylan Owens - Toronto

The 17 year old finished up his 3rd year at Blessed Sacrament HS with an overall line of .436/.512/.804 while hitting 45 HR's and driving in 148 runs. He was the winner of back to back HS Outstanding Hitter Award's and had a 28 game hitting streak this season, the 13th longest in HS history. He is also the first #1 pick to debut at #1 in the OSA Top 100 prospects. If he develops he could end up in the Hector Feliciano category.

1.2 - OF Erik 'Trucker' Surmeier - Wilmington

Another youngster was plucked from Auburn HS by the Wildcats with the second pick. Debuting at #3 on the OSA Top Prospects, Trucker boasted a career line of .450/.532/.729 with 23 HR's and 97 RBI's. He is blazing quick on the base paths and is a natural leader and workout warrior. Like Owens he's a long way from playing but could be a force down the road.

    1.3. - CF Jamie O'Hearn - Pittsburgh

O'Hearn is the first college player to get picked as he comes from Bourne and debuts as #4 on the Top Prospect list. He is a natural CF who can track down fly balls with ease and is even faster than Surmeier. Combine that with a bat that hit 38 HR's and drove in 95 runs and you have a potential superstar in the making.

    1.4 - OF Willie Salazar - Dallas

When Salazar went at the #4 pick there were several GM's who questioned the move, and OSA agreed with them as Salazar ended up 89th on the Top Prospect list. We really like the kid though. His intelligence and work ethic are sky high and he's a winner. He led the Orleans Cardinals to the 2014 Cape Cod Championship and finished 2nd in voting for the CCBL Outstanding Hitter Award. His three year line was .356/.450/.625 and he belted 34 HR's and drove in 147 runs.

1.5 - OF Gil Mullins - Los Alamos

It's not hard to figure out why Orleans won the CCBL when they had both Salazar and Mullins on the same team. Gil finished 3rd behind Salazar for Outstanding Batter and hit .333/.471/.643 with 46 HR's and 137 RBI's during his three year career. He is quick on the bases, has a rocket arm, and has all the intangibles an organization looks for in a young player. He also debuted as #5 on the Top Prospect list.

1.6 - OF Dave Jackson - New York

The run on hitters continues as Jackson was picked from Westland John Glenn HS. Word on the street is that New York believes they drafted the next Terry Mast. The 17 year old needs a lot of work in the field as he DH'd all three years in HS and never fielded a ball. Word was during pre-draft workouts he was struck in the head by a fly ball but video never surfaced of the alleged incident. Regardless he comes in at #46 on the Top Prospect list and has the power potential that has New York very excited for the future.

1.7 - SP Dave Teel - Windy City

Finally a pitcher...and one with a backstory as Teel already played for this organization once before leaving and heading back to the CCBL. Originally signed by the Playboys, Teel was forced to go back to the feeders after an investigation learned that Teel was deemed wrongly ineligible for the draft. After pitching for two years with Chatham he impressed Windy City enough to take him again. Teel throws 98 MPH, has four solid pitches in his bag, has excellent stamina, and will be another in a long line of Playboy strikeout masters.

    1.8 - OF Garrek Finn - California

The 2014 NCAA Outstanding Hitter was drafted from the Cal Bears and didn't have to travel very far to his new home. Originally from Texas this 6'4 slugger belted 47 HR's in his college career and finished with a VORP of 104.6. He came in #22 on the Top Prospect list and all though a bit slow he is a solid fielder.

    1.9 - 3B Erik Jackson - Indianapolis

The first player drafted that didn't debut in the Top Prospects list but made the OSA Top Ten list. The Clowns though more than made up for it though with pick 3.9, or 57 overall, when Ed McAllister came in at #39! Jackson though is no slouch. In his college career at Stanford he hit .343/.432/.632 with 42 HR's and 141 RBI's. He has an above average arm and can transition to the outfield if needed.

    1.10 - C Joey 'Razor' Folland - Toronto

Toronto is going young this draft as they pick another HS, this time from Westland John Glenn. Razor isn't fast, or powerful, but he can hit the ball and has the eye of an eagle. In the last two seasons he walked more than he struck out and overall batted .347/.433/.534.

    1.11 - SP Chaz Stanley - Davenport

The 2nd pitcher of the draft hails from Wareham and debuts at #16 on the Top Prospect list. Stanley is a four pitch groundball pitcher than has phenomenal control and movement. He won't blaze anything by you but he'll hammer you on the corners and give you nothing to make good contact with. In three season he had a 10-1 record with a 1.60 ERA and .92 WHIP, while striking out 159 and only walking 31. At only 20 this kid could be a solid #3 on more than a few BLB teams. We'll be interested to see where and how Davenport develops him.

    1.12 - SP C.J. Baase - Wilmington

To go along with Trucker the Wildcats add Baase who is a dominating 6'6, 99 MPH fastball pitcher. In 2013 C.J. dominated the SEC while at LSU and many thought he'd be a top pick. In March of '14 though in a game against Oregon he tore his UCL and missed the remainder of the season. How he comes back from this injury will determine what sort of pick this was. If he recovers fully it could be a steal.

    1.13 - 1B D.J. Gosser - Baltimore

Gosser earned so many awards in college at Oklahoma people started to call him 'Trophy'. Player of the Week, Batter of the Month, Outstanding Hitter of the Year...all of them multiple times. He comes in at #79 on the Top Prospect list and Baltimore management is high on him, especially after trading up. He has tremendous power potential as he showed his freshman year when he hit 30 HR's with an OPS of 1.448.

    1.14 - SP Dave Baldwin - Morgantown

Baldwin was the 2013 Outstanding Pitcher at Cal State when he went 8-1 with a 1.18 ERA, 102 K's, and 27 BB's. He has a wicked slider to complement his fastball and changeup and a nice work ethic. Debuting at #32 on Top Prospect list he is another pitcher that could see the BLB next season.

1.15 - SP Dave Walker - Pawtucket (traded to Davenport)

How good did Davenport just get with Stanley and now Walker. Walker went to USC for two season and destroyed the west coast. He finished up 9-5 with a 1.68 ERA and .79 WHIP. He struckout 186 while only walking 31. He throws a fastball, curveball, and splitter and has all the intangibles you would want. At #35 on the Top Prospect list both he and Stanley could form a 1-2 for the next decade.

    1.16 - 1B Milt Stoll - Batavia

The Muckdogs traded 1.13 to Baltimore and saw their #1 on the board Gosser immediately get picked. They settled for Stoll who didn't make it on the Top Prospect list but had a productive career at Harwhich where he hit .299/.385/.647 with 46 HR's. Batavia is hoping he shows that same power since he can't really field or run.

1.17 - SS Johnny 'Spike' Knott - Los Angeles

Like Stoll 'Spike' didn't make any top lists but he can run and he can hit, two things you pretty much want in a ballplayer. With 36 stolen bases and a .400 OBP for his career he leadoff hitter in the making. Add in that he's a more than capable infielder than can play 2B, SS, or 3B and he could be another steal this late in the 1st round.

    1.18 - 3B Jimmy Wiskow - Caroline

A youngster out of Blessed Sacrament HS means Wiskow will have years to develop in the Tobs farm system. He's a good hitter, has the potential to play any position in the field, an average runner and just an overall nice guy. In two HS seasons he hit .316/.423/.512 with 14 HR's and 68 RBI's.

    1.19 - 2B Dave Graves - Baltimore

Graves didn't make the Top Prospect list but had a heck of a career at Clemson. Overall he hit .357/.430/.595 with 24 HR's and 100 RBI's. He has great speed and is another player that with time could play almost any position in the field.

1.20 SP Jimmy Cooper - Baltimore

Coming in at #57 on the Top Prospect list is no surprise for Coop who came from Rice. After hurting his shoulder in May against UCLA he still won the NCAA 2014 Outstanding Pitcher Award by going 7-0 with a 1.38 ERA and .81 WHIP. He is a control master that has five pitches in his bag and during his career struck out 171 while only walking 31. You can't get much better at pick 1.20.

    1.21 - LF Pat Webb - Denver

The CCBL 2014 Outstanding Hitter gives the masses what they want...the long ball. In three seasons at Wareham hit put together 51 round trippers while driving in 138 runs. Some scouts questioned his contact but he ended up hitting .371 during his award winning campaign. All though not a man known for his speed he is known for his arm, an arm which has thrown out more than a few players trying to stretch a single into a double.

    1.22 - SP Ron Dodd - Syracuse

In two season with Orleans in the CCBL he won two championships and was 10-1 with a 3.08 ERA and 1.28 WHIP. Dodd has four pitches to choose from, including a nice forkball which led to many of his 157 career strikeouts. He is also a post season gamer as during this years title run he was 3-1 with a 1.71 ERA and 29 K's.

    1.23 - SP Pat Falvey - Baltimore

Baltimore strikes gold again as Falvey comes in at #49 on the Top Prospect list, even higher than Cooper, and was #1 on the OSA Scout List. At 6'6 with a clocked 100 MPH cutter fastball he is an intimidating force. In three seasons at Oklahoma he racked up 229 K's, including 10 games where he had 10 or more. The joke always was when Falvey is pitching you better bring extra paper and scissors for the outfield wall.

    1.24 - SP Al Lesser - Toronto

When you draft 1.24 and still get the #59th rated prospect you 'did done good'. Lesser went to Oregon State and was known for his tremendous control on the mound and his lack of control with the ladies. With his dashing good looks and soulpatch goatee when Lesser wasn't pitching he was partying. His teammates love him though and he brings a clubhouse together so Toronto scored big with this late pick.

    Other Notable Picks

    2.11 - 3B Pat Brown - Davenport

How Brown fell this far we don't know. All though never given the chance at ASU he can run as fast as anyone and has a darn good arm and range in the infield. At the plate he hit .309/.441/.634 with 34 HR's and 85 RBI's. He is a fine addition to a team who really built a farm system this draft.

    3.10 - SP Dave Gotschall - Denver

Picked 58th overall Gotschall comes in ranked #36 in the Top Prospect list. Not a burner by any means as he throws in the 86 MPH, he has tremendous stuff and great control. In three seasons at Bowling Green HS he struck out 176 batters while walking 42 and finished with an 11-6 record.

    3.11 - 2B DJ Barnard - Dallas

The Sharks nailed this pick as Barnard checks in at #45 on the Top Prospect list. A three year starter at Masconoment High he had a career batting average of .381! He also hit 28 HR's and is more than capable of being a solid second baseman in the future.

    9.11 - CF Jimmy Brimmer - Davenport

Davenport better watch out as 23 other BLB teams are going to have spies following their scouts around. Taken with the 203rd pick Brimmer starts out at #54 on the Top Prospect list! Not a huge power hitter but in three seasons at Chatham he had a .362 OBP. His true talents though are in the field and on the basepath. He is one of the fastest CF's you will ever see as his range has already produced several SportsCenter Top Plays. If he can even hit moderately well he could find himself a starting job someday.

4.7 - LF Dylan Pointer - Windy City

The 79th pick comes in at #55 on the Top Prospect list because he has the ability to hit, run, and field. At only 17 and from Bowling Green High he hit .390/.526/.561 his senior year. He has a good work ethic and is a natural leader that others love to be around. He is a great pick up for an organization rebuilding.

Great read Matt! Thanks! Our scout loves Salazar... But we could get a better prospect... Let's hope he turns out in the beast that my scout thinks he is!

Really nice writeup. Wish I would have been more involved this draft, I missed out on a lot of talent.

Thanks for the write up. Be interesting to go back and revisit this post in a few seasons to see how all these draftees fared.

With the 2015 draft around the corner, I thought this would be a good time to briefly take a look at your draftees, 1 year removed from amateur status.

Erik Jackson... Tried to trade up for him. Landed him anyway and he's into the Top 25.

Phenomenal draft, lots of impact players in that 1st round. 2015 wasn't nearly as deep and I'm interested to see where the new class settles in the rankings.

Thanks Matt! I loved ready about the coulda, woulda, shouldas! That year being my first draft was a little kid in the candy store-ish.

I'd say that Salazar kid is doing OK. Down with the OSA.

The 2014 draft will be talked about for decades.
