Gutierrez Expected to Miss 4 Weeks: The latest news from the Death Valley Scorpions clubhouse is this: right fielder Hector Gutierrez is expected to be out of action for another 4 weeks. Cole Blisters Davenport: It was a good day for the Scorpions at Miletich Stadium as they clipped the Davenport Brawlers 7-2. It was tremendous day for Tom Cole, who went on quite a hitting spree with a 5 for 5 barrage. The Death Valley right fielder told reporters after his big 5-hit performance, "I don't have any buzz words. I'm not 'dialed in' or 'in a zone,' as they say. As far as the hitting goes, I try to keep it simple. I try not to look into it too much. Basically the pitcher throws the ball, I try to pick up the spin, then try to hit it. Today I picked up the spin very well." Tom Cole singled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th, hit a two-run double in the 7th and singled in the 9th.

Phillips Tags Guides for 5 Hits: 5 times is a charm -- at least in the world of baseball. When a player gets 5 or more hits in a game, he is honored in the record book and the latest honoree is Tommy Phillips of the Hartford Whalers. He tore up the Maine Guides to the tune of 5 hits in 5 at-bats in the Hartford 11-2 win today at Samuel Stone Memorial Field. "Phillips was a tough out today," the Maine manager said to the press in the postgame interview. "He hit some very good pitches with that quick bat of his. Not an easy out, that's for sure." Tommy Phillips singled in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 6th and hit an RBI triple in the 7th.

This year Phillips has batted at a .318 pace with 103 hits, 3 home runs, 34 RBIs and scored 34 times.

Davis Learns More about Injury: Shane Davis could soon be placed on the disabled list. The Indianapolis second baseman told reporters that he expects to be "out of commission" for 5 months because of bone chips in his elbow. He hasn't played since 07/09/2014 and, he said, he's "itchin' to get back out there."

In the 2014 season Davis is hitting .214 with no home runs.

Toste Baffles Pawtucket: Dave Toste of the Maine Guides really zeroed in on Pawtucket hitters at Old Port Park, blanking them 5-0 on 4 hits. Toste struck out 4, and gave up 1 walk in defeating the Patriots.

This season to date Toste has a record of 8 wins and 4 losses with a 3.59 ERA, has appeared in 17 games and struck out 89 in 115.1 innings.

Moon Fashions Shutout Against Death Valley: The Scorpions were no match for Al Moon of the Carolina Tobs. He totally shut down Death Valley at The Sandbox. In the 5-0 win, Moon tossed a 5-hitter, struck out 5, and walked 0.

Moon has made 18 starts this season, posting 10 wins and 4 losses. Opposing clubs are batting .251 against him and he has 81 strikeouts in 128.2 innings with a 2.38 ERA.

Knights Whitewash Whalers, Ballard Winner: The New York Knights posted a 1-0 shutout over Hartford today on the strength of a strong performance by Jimmy Ballard. The Knights pitcher held the Whalers to 4 hits while walking 0 and fanning 5 in the route-going win.

This season Ballard has compiled a 6-7 mark with a 5.08 ERA.

Will New York Trade Gleason?: New York's Brendon Gleason has mixed feelings about a possible trade. The 36-year-old first baseman, when reached for comment on recent trade rumors, replied, "I've made some good friends here. I'm not sure I'm ready to leave."

5-Hit Blitz by Batavia's Ventura: Ervin Ventura told the press after his 5-hit day, "Every batter wants to have a quality at-bat every time he steps up to the plate. He wants to hit the ball hard." Well, that's just what Ventura of the Batavia Muckdogs did against the Carolina Tobs. He went to the plate 5 times and 5 times he delivered base hits, much to the chagrin of the Tobs, who suffered a 11-2 defeat. "Not much that I can say," offered the losing manager, "he just hammered the heck out of us." Ervin Ventura singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 6th and singled in the 8th.

This year Ventura has batted at a .307 pace with 58 hits, 1 home run, 18 RBIs and scored 33 times.

McCarley Smacks 5 Hits for Scorpions: Scorpions second baseman Troy McCarley went ballistic today with the bat. He smoked the Amigos for 5 hits and sparked Death Valley to a 12-2 win over Los Alamos at Babylon. Troy McCarley singled in the 1st, doubled in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off Tommy Carpenter in the 5th, singled in the 6th and hit an RBI single in the 8th.

This season McCarley is swinging the bat at a .312 pace. He has hit 8 home runs and scored 51 times, while driving in 41. His on-base percentage is .342 and he has played in 90 games.

Davila Hit String Snapped at 20: Ray Davila has been hitting the heck out the ball for the past few weeks, but today his 20-game hitting streak came to an end as he went 0-for-1 in the Maine Guides 8-4 win over the New York Knights.

This season Davila is batting at a .328 clip with 30 home runs and 78 RBIs.

Red-Hot Haraguchi Scorches Whalers: Hidetoshi Haraguchi really did a number on the Whalers in the Pawtucket 14-1 victory. Not just anyone can get 5 hits in 5 at-bats. But Hidetoshi Haraguchi did just that today for the Patriots and gave his batting average a healthy boost and sparked his club in the win. "I felt real good in the batter's box today. I had confidence in my swing and knew that it was there and that I could get the job done," the 31-year-old left fielder said after his record-setting performance. Hidetoshi Haraguchi hit a solo-shot off Robby Dwyer in the 2nd, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 6th and singled in the 9th.

Los Angeles's Lona Bags DL Top Batter for July: Marco Lona received the Domestic League Batter of the Month trophy earlier today for his efforts at the plate this last month.

"He might be getting older," Los Angeles's manager told reporters, "But he's been around long enough to know what it takes to put a stretch such as this together... and he doesn't keep that to himself. He's always talking to the younger guys in the clubhouse helping 'em any way they'll let him. Marco's value to our team goes farther than the numbers he puts up on the field."

To win the honor Lona put up a .430 batting average, 5 home runs, 17 RBIs and scored 21 times in July.

For the season Lona is hitting .315, batted in 47 runs with 10 home runs and 62 runs scored.

Gibson Crowned Batter of the Month in July: July's Import League Batter of the Month trophy was claimed by right fielder Tom Gibson of the Philadelphia Freedom.

Last month he compiled a .420 batting average with 8 home runs, 23 RBIs, 17 runs scored and a .505 on-base percentage.

In 102 games Gibson is hitting .297 this season with 109 hits, 24 home runs, 64 RBIs, 50 walks, .383 OBP and has scored 69 runs.

Ortiz Stands Out, Choice for Best Pitcher: When Enrique Ortiz takes the hill, he's a good bet to nail down the victory for the Hartford Whalers. At least that's the way it was in May.

He excelled with a 4-0 mark and 1.56 ERA in 5 starts. In 34.2 innings, he fanned 24 and walked 11.
That's why he was honored today as the Pitcher of the Month by the Domestic League.

On his stats sheet for the year Ortiz shows a 7-7 record, 19 starts, 112 innings, 62 strikeouts and a 4.02 ERA.

The 27-year-old Razza added 33 strikeouts in 37.1 innings and 5 walks to his season record and compiled a 2.89 ERA. Opposing batters hit .235 against him.

But he did. Rosema went on a tear and cracked hit after hit off Los Alamos pitching. When the dust settled on the diamond at Babylon, he had a career 5-5 day and something he will long remember. And the Baltimore Bulldogs had a 6-4 victory over the Amigos. "Yeah, it'll be something nice to tell the grandkids, but it won't get me a hit tomorrow," he joked in the postgame interview. Jimmy Rosema hit an RBI double in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and hit an RBI single in the 8th.

This season Torres has delivered 116 hits in 389 at-bats for a .298 average with 9 home runs. He is getting on base at a .351 clip and his totals also include 27 RBIs and 62 runs scored. This year Torres has played in 102 games.

Pawtucket's Griffiths Out 4 Weeks: It took the Pawtucket team doctor a while to realize it, but third baseman Tom Griffiths won't simply play through a strained hamstring after he got hurt running the bases in today's Millers-Patriots game. At first, it looked like Griffiths might be back as early as tomorrow, but now the prognosis isn't quite so good; he's expected to miss at least 4 weeks.

Currently Griffiths is batting .313 with 7 home runs and 42 RBIs.
