  • Around the BLB - Offseason Edition 1

The dam burst in Free Agency as the calendar turned into 2013. Here's a quick look at what happened this month...

    New Divisional Alignments

January first marked an historic moment for the BLB. The entire league re-aligned on New Year's day. The motion, widely accepted by league ownership, redesigned the traditional divisions based on geographic location in an effort seen by many inside the league at an attempt at competitive balance. Old rivalries have been severed and new ones will be ignited.

    Fashion Revolution

The current trend for change wasn't limited to just divisions. Several franchises have unveiled new logo and uniform looks for the 2013 season.

    Minor League Movers

Change wasn't limited to the major league level. Maine moved their A affiliate to Vermont, Hartford sent their AAA team to Moscow... Idaho, and Death Valley relocated to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.

    Denver Opens Checkbook Early

The Bulls went big in the opening of free agency, adding $168m in payroll to their ledger. Among the new additions was a focus on the bullpen. Last Call winner RJ Manning heads from Indy to the Mile High city, along with Marco Perez, Danny Melgoza and starter Dusty Paulsen. The Bulls also added C Ruben Luna, OF BJ Mulcahy and IF Johnny Ingle.

    Brendan Lindsey, David Rodriguez Relocate

Former Pale Ale winner Brendan Lindsey heads to defending Domestic League champion Los Angeles on a 4 year, $54.5m deal. It's a savvy addition for the Dinos, who already boast two dominant starters in Pat Yahn and David Palomares.

Recently ringed CL David Rodriguez heads to the Crescent City, as New Orleans signs the former Bats closer to a 4 year, $37m deal.

    Young Stars Cash In

Former rivals Johnny Talley of Pawtucket and Jamie Monson inked lucrative extensions. 26 year old righty Talley, who posted a 2.94 ERA in his 3rd season, signs on for 5 more years as a Patriot at a total of $40m. Meanwhile, slugging 1B Monson will be hitting 40 homeruns in Pittsburgh for the foreseeable future, signing a 5 year, $46m extension.

    Big Names Narrowing Choices

With some of the big fish signing in December, the next set of free agency dominoes appears ready to fall. Look for veteran hurlers Robby Aten, Dave Dunham, CJ Skinner, Jesse VonEttinghausen and Fred Mattison to cash in.

Not as robust a market as the pitchers, teams will still be lining up for the services of OFs Sonny Marshburn, Tom Estes, Travis Wallis and Geoff Dorsey, C Dave D'Orio and 1B Jon Montalbo, Dave Gamboa, Roberto Goto and Diego Flores.

    We aren't the Bulls!

But nice write-up. Same for everyone that's been writing lately.
