  • Guides part ways with franchise games played leader Romarigues

<img src="http://i61.tinypic.com/10motnq.png" height="270" width="180px" style="float:right; margin-right:71px;margin-bottom:14px;margin-left:14px;border:2px solid black;">PORTLAND, ME — On the eve of the BLB All-Star Game, the Maine Guides announced the unconditional release of infielder Tristan Romarigues.

The 37-year-old Maine lifer debuted in 1996. He played in 2,132 games with the Guides. He held the club's hits record until Steve Suarez passed him in May.

"We're grateful to Tristan for what he contributed to this franchise," said Maine Guides general manager Matt Blumenthal. "Over 2,100 hits and nine Defense With Integrity Awards across three different positions—it's hard to ask for more than what Tristan gave us in his 17 seasons here."

Romarigues hit .153 this year with Maine and had been removed from the starting lineup in June.

Sources close to the team suggested the infielder was unhappy with his new role and believed he could still contribute to a team's starting lineup. The organization's move to release him is thought to be something of a mutual decision.

It's not yet known what other moves could be pending, but sources suggested there could be a trade during the All-Star Break to fill the roster spot.

His journey was especially interesting because he was a notorious second half player.

He'd go into July owning a .600 OPS, and then he would go on a tear and OPS .800 for the rest of the season with his usual DWI-caliber defense.

It happened every single year for the last half-decade at least.

Even now, I'm wondering if I'm making a mistake letting him go.

Maybe someone will pick him up and he'll go out and crush the ball for the last two months of the season like he always does.

I wouldn't put it past him.

            Sort of.

From 1998 through 2007, he was a legitimately good two-way infielder who OPSed at least .700—sometimes .750—while winning the DWI at whatever position he was asked to play.

Is that mediocre? He was never a star but I think he was better than mediocre most of the time.

His personality profile says, "An Average guy." I think you're underselling him here.

                  Still pay the salary.

                  It came down to chemistry.

He was obviously unhappy with coming off the bench.

And being sentimental and grateful for his contributions, I thought I'd give him a chance to catch on elsewhere and be happy starting there, if he finds an opportunity.

What about if he finds another team? Salary will be taken off your books?

No, we paid his Guides salary upon release.

Another team would sign him to a new contract.

If I waived him rather than released him, a team could have claimed him and I wouldn't have been responsible for his salary.

Why didn't I do that, considering it would have been fiscally smarter for me?

I'd prefer to give the player a chance to catch on with a new team, rather than potentially end up an "asset" in waiver hell like some guys sadly turn out to be.
