The whole debate over the value of a 10th round pick today got me thinking about draft picks. Today, most teams think "anything after the 4th round isn't worth anything." They are probably right, especially with the drafts changing recently but this is more to identify the hidden "gems" we have seen over the years.
I'm bored today with free time so I thought about posting a discussion on that very topic. It would be next to impossible to do this research just one person but if each team could make nominations, I'm sure we could find some interesting results!
Washington Bats
5th Round - IF Pete Summers. Never made an All-Star team but was the '95 Refreshing New Brew. Had an eight year career for DC and Philly, finishing with a .260 AVG, .720 OPS, 105 OPS+ and was an above average fielder at 2B, 3B and SS. I'm sure there is someone better from the 5th out there.
8th Round - Darryl Turner made the BLB as a backup OF in seven BLB seasons. OPS .630. Has to be better out there.
9th OF Napoleon Mendoza - http://www.simgamingnetwork.com/blb/...ayer_8360.html
10th Round - SP/RP Chad Mullen played for six BLB clubs over 11 seasons. Twice topped 40 saves. Best year as a starter: 13-10, 3.27 ERA, 1.13 WHIP. In the running...
11th Round - SP Joe Zazueto - My scout had him 4-6-5 with a high groundball. Was a surprise winner of the #6 rotation spot in 1986 and went on to win the Refreshing New Brew after going 14-8, 3.00 ERA, 1.26 WHIP in 207 IP. Had one more solid year as a starter before falling back to the minors to never be heard from again.
13th Round - MR Chad Harden - Six year BLB career. Mainly as a mop-up reliever.
15th - MR Lonny Hooper - Appeared in three BLB seasons, his best a rookie campaign of 5.46 ERA and 1.89 WHIP for a Pawtucket team in 1990.
Non-Washington's
6th SP RJ Curtis - Best 6th round pick ever. He had one of the best non-Pancho seasons by a pitcher ever.
