  • Pawtucket 2010 Rookie watch

Once we reach May 24th Pawtucket will no longer hold the #1 prospect system in baseball (assuming torch gets passed to Cali) with that in mind, time to review how the rookies are faring this season:

C Dave Piekarski. Little better actually then I thought. Finally got the full time starting duties in May and handling it just fine. Yes he still plays 3B against lefties but doesn't seem to be affecting our pitchers. Scout still sees quiet of bit of development left. Fell off the list a few weeks ago.

    Batting .270 / 5 hrs/ OPS .780.

SP Johnny Talley. Has the #1 spot in the rotation, but that's just because Im afraid to disrupt anyone on that staff especially Felipe Vega. He's been knocked around a bit so far posting a 4.42 era with a 1.47 WHIP basically rookie like numbers. He is 3-2 though. Always considered a future 2/3 down the road, the positive so far is his overall health. Maybe he blows up who knows but so far his history shows otherwise.

CL Diego Lovera. When FA 1 took place I litterally jumped off my CPU seat when I saw we signed him. Expensive yes, but it was basically adding a additional top ten prospect overnight. So far no walks and 21 strikeouts with 10 saves and a respectable 2.04 ERA. I think this kid only gets better. Also helped settle in our setups spots (Fajardo/ Franco).

MR Trent Mccleary. Kid is really on a short leash, but since he's very raw it makes sense. (1 inning in 3 games). We've had a history with rule V picks and this is usually how we handle underdeveloped players (Zachary Mitchell). Very possible he could be back in AAA next season, but my scout says he can be a really good setup guy. Verdict still out on him, but like him.

Combined with LF Tommy Van Leer dropping off (traded for another former top 10 prospect CF Sonny Mason). 6 players in all I expect us to drop to the middle of the pack though two top 10 players will still remain (McDade, 'Beanpole')

Good luck Linty with your crop. Time will tell if this unit is anything like the Batavia ,WC, Pitt prospect classes from the 00s .

So far I know of three guys who offered more to Lovera.

Two of those have worse records right now. Maybe Lovera knew something.

Oh I thought someone would pay 10 ml per. Think not going crazy on the amount of seasons plus the "player option" might of swayed him?

I traded 'Spanky' to Syracuse a year ago taking a big risk not having a true prospect closer. A got a bunch of serviceable ones, but not like this kids.
