Philadelphia-Maine Deal Confirmed: Newspapers in Philadelphia and Maine reported that the Freedom have reached a deal sending 23-year-old minor league shortstop William Kroll and 23-year-old minor league starting pitcher Dave Dow to the Guides for 25-year-old minor league starting pitcher Brayden Jamieson.

Murillo Rips Washington for 5 Hits: It seemed that Carolina left fielder Ricky Murillo could do no wrong as the Tobs kayoed the Bats 8-7 today as he rapped out 5 hits in 7 at-bats. Washington pitchers couldn't get him out as Murillo seemed to know which pitches they were throwing.

"I think the Tobs were stealing signs," growled one unhappy Washington fan.

"I just felt good today. I saw the ball well and just wanted to make good contact and put the ball in play," said the jubilant Murillo in the postgame press interview.

BLB News: Draft Pool Revealed: The biggest anxiety for 2009 new young players is getting drafted. For the young man with something to prove, simple entrance into the draft does not guarantee a big league contract. Some will suffer the excruciating torment of having to stand by as their competitors get picked before them, hoping that they get a slim chance to prove their skills anywhere. At any rate, teams now have 65 days to scout the draft pool before the draft is held.

The Transactions page also gets a new section dedicated to the draft pool, which will be available for 65 days prior to the draft.

The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be:

Kataoka Gets Injury Report: Team officials for the Syracuse Slammers have revealed that the recent injury to Makato Kataoka will keep him out for 2 months. The 25-year-old right fielder suffered a strained hamstring on 04/12/2009. He has not played since.

Currently Kataoka has 1 home run and a .308 batting average.

Star 2B Signs Extension with Batavia: Batavia fans celebrated as word of a signing became reality. Javy Sanchez won't be pulling up stakes anytime soon, as he has signed a 4-year extension at a pay rate of $4,000,000 per annum.

Since he is widely seen as an integral part of the club, Batavia officials had to keep Sanchez from jumping ship.

This year Sanchez is hitting .219 with no home runs.

Council Belts 5 Hits: The Millers were defeated 10-8 today at Kennywood Park by the Slammers, but you can't say Travis Council didn't give it his best try. The Millers shortstop came to the plate 6 times and collected 5 hits. It was a good day for Council and a tough day for Pittsburgh.

"I just go up there and swing away and hope it hits the barrel of the bat," he said. "There really isn't any plan."

No plan or not, Council delivered today... 5-6 is outstanding in any league.

Travis Council hit a solo-shot off Jimmy Cornell in the 1st, doubled in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th, struck out in the 8th and singled in the 11th.

A look at his current stats shows Council with a .326 average, 3 home runs, 5 RBIs and 7 runs scored. He has played in 9 games.

Death Valley Shuts out Bulldogs, Pulido Winner: Adrian Pulido of the Death Valley Scorpions was firing on all cylinders against the Baltimore Bulldogs. He blanked them 8-0 on 3 hits and posted 4 strikeouts and no walks.

Denver's McPherson Goes Ballistic with 5 Hits: It was a sensational day at the plate for Jamie McPherson, but a letdown as well as the BC dropped the game 8-4 to the Buckeyes.

Nonetheless the Denver center fielder was pure misery for the Cleveland pitching staff. He left them shellshocked with 5 hits in 5 at-bats in an explosive display of hitting.

"It's always good to get a bunch of hits in a game, but you also want to win. That's the important thing," McPherson said.

The manager of the Buckeyes told BNN reporters after the game, "McPherson put the ball into play. He really hit it hard. When you do that, you've got a pretty good chance to do some damage. And that's what happened. I feel like we threw him some pretty good pitches, but he just put some good swings on the ball."

Injury Update for Death Valley, Cash: Colin Cash will have to wait a while longer. The Death Valley center fielder was informed this afternoon that he will miss another 6 weeks with a fractured thumb. The injury has kept him off the field since 04/17/2009. Though Cash had hoped to return soon, he has no choice but to be patient. "Gotta stay focused," he said. "Gotta stay positive."

So far this season Cash has put up a .349 batting average with 15 hits, no home runs and 5 RBIs.

Medical Diagnosis Updated on Caplan: The medical report is in: the injury that has kept Windy City right fielder J.J. Caplan out of action since 04/17/2009 will sideline him for another 2 weeks. The 30-year-old Caplan, who has a strained rib cage muscle, said he heals quickly. "I'll be back soon," he said, "and I'll pick up where I left off. "

Looking at his season stats, Caplan has compiled a .386 batting average and a .429 on-base percentage, while hitting 2 home runs and driving in 8 runs.

Patriots, Slammers Confirm Deal: Pawtucket and Syracuse have agreed to a trade today. 22-year-old starting pitcher Tadaomi Nishimura, 30-year-old minor league right fielder Luther Bennerman, 23-year-old closer R.J. Green, 22-year-old third baseman Melvin Portillo and a 4th round draft pick will go to the Slammers. In exchange the Patriots will receive 30-year-old center fielder Tony Cavazos and a 1st round draft pick.

For his career Bennerman has batted .283 and hit 79 home runs.

Thus far this year Cavazos has hit .360 with no home runs and 2 RBIs.

Windy City Mourns Passing of Owner: The family of Windy City Playboys owner Mason Faulder announced today that he had died after a prolonged illness. His replacement is expected to be his son, Fred Faulder, who has served in many capacities with the club. Some sources said the younger Faulder was a "chip off the old block," while others commented that he differed in many respects from his father. Speaking off the record, a Windy City Playboys official commented, "Fred could be described as charitable in financial matters and lenient in personality traits."

The 32-year-old first baseman went 0-for-4. It should have made for a lousy day, but his teammates picked up the slack and whipped the Mohawks 6-1.

At the press conference after the game, McLouth told reporters, "Everybody did the job but me. No problem, we won the game."

Asked how he felt about the streak ending, he grinned and replied, "It was a good run. I'll try to start another one tomorrow."

This season McLouth has hit at a .286 clip with 5 RBIs, 0 home runs and 9 runs scored. He has played in 16 games.

Scorpions Send Poe to Syracuse: 30-year-old reliever Tommy Poe and 34-year-old starting pitcher Tom Gentner will now be playing for the Syracuse Slammers and 23-year-old left fielder Zack Mayne, 20-year-old second baseman Roberto Jaime and a 4th round draft pick will be suiting up for the Death Valley Scorpions. The trade was announced today at a press conference by club officials.

In his career Poe has collected 25 victories and 10 defeats along with 2 saves. He has a 3.38 ERA and has struck out 336 in 328 innings.

Sandy Franco Not Happy in Carolina?: Rumors circulating around town say reliever Sandy Franco is not happy at all playing in Carolina and that the Tobs are actively shopping him around.

Paulsen Pitches California to Shutout Victory: Dusty Paulsen was stingy with runs in his latest outing against the Knights. He shut them out 4-0 on 4 hits with 8 strikeouts and 2 walks.

The California manager said, "Dusty was very aggressive tonight. He threw everything he had with a lot of confidence."

The losing manager had praise, too. "He was throwing strikes with all his pitches and mixing it up well. Paulsen has a sneaky fastball, and whatever that off-speed pitch was, it was keeping our timing off."

This season Paulsen has made no relief appearances and saved 0 games. His record is 2-2 with 20 strikeouts in 26.2 innings with a 5.06 ERA.

Malone Shines in Gem: Fans at Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower Field witnessed the Canadians blank the Freedom behind a superb effort by Ron Malone. The Toronto pitcher allowed 4 hits in recording the shutout.

Patriots, Tobs Confirm Trade: The Pawtucket Patriots have released a statement confirming the trade of a 3rd round draft pick to the Carolina Tobs for 29-year-old reliever Sandy Franco and $10,000,000 in cash. The deal was finalized today.

Both Morris and the Amigos are said to be very pleased to come to this agreement.

$8,900,000 Lands RF Marshburn for Amigos: A wave of jubilation swept over Los Alamos today as fans and team officials celebrated the signing of Sonny Marshburn.

No Hits for Chiba, Streak Ends at 20: The 20-game hitting streak of 26-year-old first baseman Terumoto Chiba came to an end today at Phillips Field. The Knights held him hitless in 3 at-bats and also sent the Baltimore Bulldogs down to defeat 5-1.

Deal: Scherer for Luna: The Baseball News Network is reporting that the Millers and Slammers have consummated a trade. Syracuse will receive 32-year-old reliever Shane Carroll, 23-year-old first baseman Jamie Monson, 28-year-old catcher Jimmy Scherer, 25-year-old minor league left fielder Danny Gomez and 26-year-old minor league third baseman Willie Tristan in a swap for 33-year-old catcher Ruben Luna and a 2nd round draft pick. A league analyst called the trade a "pretty even transaction."

Thus far this year Scherer has hit .293 with 3 home runs and 15 RBIs.

Luna is currently batting .271 with 8 home runs and 19 RBIs.

Suspensions Handed Out for Bench-Clearing Brawl: One player challenged the other with some angry words at the Reign-Slammers game at The Pond yesterday. There was some pushing and shoving -- then the dugouts emptied. There was a lot of scuffling, but no punches thrown. When order was finally restored and the dust settled, the umpires ejected Seattle's Sorin Pantilimon and Syracuse's Mat Watford.

Now both antagonists will get some time off, courtesy of the league commissioner. They were suspended 5 games for inappropriate and aggressive behavior.

Henne Blisters Pittsburgh: It's not something you read about in the sports pages every day -- a 5-for-5 day. It might come around only once in a career -- a lot of players never have one -- but Zachary Henne got one today. He scattered hits all over Kennywood Park to pace Indianapolis to a 7-3 victory over Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh skipper told reporters in the press room, "Tip your hat to him. He hit some good pitches. According to the scouting report, Henne hit several that he is not supposed to hit."

Zachary Henne singled in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off Sal Bermudez in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 4th, singled in the 6th and singled in the 8th.

In his 2009 season totals, Henne has 2 home runs, .246 BA, .304 OBP, 13 RBIs and 11 runs scored.

Veteran Brown, Death Valley Complete Deal: Fans were generally receptive of a newly announced deal between Jerry Brown and Death Valley, despite lingering doubts about the 34-year-old's character. Many observers think that as long as he keeps his mouth shut, he'll be all right.

Bertin Spins Shutout Against Tobs: Joey Bertin kept Carolina hitters off balance all game long as the Batavia pitcher blanked the Tobs 7-0. They managed to get 2 hits off Bertin, who struck out 6 and walked 2.

So far this year Bertin has a 8-2 record with a 1.25 ERA.

English No-Hits Reign: In a brilliant performance at The Sandbox, Death Valley pitcher Robby English entered an elite group today by tossing a no-hitter against the Seattle Reign. Hurling a complete game he fanned 6 and walked 4 in the 1-0 victory.

In the clubhouse, English said, "I was getting my off-speed stuff over so they couldn't sit on the fastball. My guys made some nice plays behind me, too, and cut off several hits."

Up to now English has recorded a record of 9-1. In 11 starts he has fanned 64 batters in 75.2 innings with a 2.02 ERA.

Colin Reed Has Accident: Team officials reported to the press that Carolina second baseman Colin Reed was injured last night and suffered a sprained ankle while kicking his locker after an argument with his manager. He received treatment at a local hospital and was released. He is expected to miss 1-2 weeks before resuming baseball activity.

So far this season, Reed has recorded a .300 batting average with 45 hits, 5 home runs, 21 RBIs, 15 runs scored and a .376 OBP.
