Personally, if I was Dallas or Death Valley, I would have called these guys up last week. What if they come out on fire? What if Reeves leads Dallas to the playoffs? What if English proves to already be the best pitcher in the rotation?

I thought hard about that, but I'm OK with my decision. I don't think he's going to be as dominant as we think to start. If I have to guess, he's going to be a 4.00 ERA guy through June next year. Then he should pick it up and get where I need him to be the rest of his career for us to compete with you long term.

Personally, I have noticed a little bit of a rookie boost. Not every time you call someone up, but a lot of the time the rookie will play better than expected as a rookie. Often even better in the half-season call up than they do in year two full season.

Examples: Manny Reyes, Heishu Shiraishi, Joe Zazueto, blanking on others...

I think right now, Coma has a good chance to be your #1 SP the next few weeks. I feel the same way about Reeves. However, Dallas is eight games back and is a long shot at a playoff birth.

One of those high schoolers we cooked forever. Can't bat a lick, but dam this kid can play some D. Always hung around our top prospect list, even gets journeyman verbage from time to time though we never believe it. Why is he up? Cuz Pat Gould is hurt and we wanted a defensive righty on the bench.

Agreed. I think Whitworth is going to be guilty of this.

There is some logic to it.

A lot of rookies, in different sports, often come out very hot because no one has seen them before. In baseball, pitchers don't know a new hitters hot spots or weak spots. On the flip side, a pitcher is hard to hit if you have never seen his pitches before.

Granted, a lot of rookies can't handle the pressure/spotlight or they just aren't good enough for the top level yet, so they struggle.

Yeah I agree with you. My team has benefitted from it as well. It doesn't happen for everyone. I feel like hitters benefit more than pitchers.

This has to be the earliest call up for me ever.

Another one of those 3rd rounders that was seem to hit on, his contact looked like crap at first from my scout. Now "projects to be above average". Like most teenagers, looked lost and confused in his first season in A, then showed some progress in 2004 and started developing his power game in the second half. Then in 2005 showed off some contact ability hitting .324 in limited at bats so we decided to step him up to AA the rest of this season. Hit a wall late season, but still ended up batting .271 with 18 homeruns!!! Currently #65 prospect in baseball.

He's basically up the next few weeks since we really didn't have a decent righty in AAA at the moment that can help. Plus.....think he plays well at Pawtucket for us the final week. Will also see some at bats versus lefties. After that...back to slow cooking in AA.
