In a small press conference at Faygo Field in Downtown Detroit, Representatives from the Virginia Colonials Organization announced today that their Horizon League (AAA) affiliate would be re-branded when play begins in 1994.
Organization President, Clay Shaver:
"When we moved the Richmond Speed to Detroit 13 seasons ago, we were dedicated to keeping this team and baseball alive in the heart of my hometown of Detroit. We're happy to announce today that we have renewed our lease with the city and Mayor Archer. With the new long-term deal, we have made the decision to change our team name and colors to more accurately reflect the hardworking American spirit in this city's residents. Beginning in 1994, the Detroit Union will be known as the Detroit Titans."
Young pitching prospect Gene Legere was present to model the new uniforms.
Shaver also mentioned that new uniforms were in the planning phases for the teams lone Virginia-based affiliate in Blacksburg as well.
