Virginia Colonials -- Week 1 (SIM 1)
6-0
3-0 vs Batavia
3-0 @ Baltimore
-- BORN TO RUN - The Colonials stole 21 bases (caught just one) this week including 8 from reigning IL Stout Slugger Hector Chavez, 5 from the ageless Mel Woodbury and 4 from Jerry Daly. Daly's 4th swipe of the week was also his 100th in just 318 career games.
-- DANNY BOY - Pressed into starting duty (hehe) with the Spring Training injury to Lonnie Scott, "Mr Colonial" Danny Nelson laced on the cleats in all 6 games and while his bat wasn't hot (though he did homer once) his defense had him looking like his old self. The 33 year old, who has essentially become a Player/Coach, gunned down 3 baserunners from his position in LF this week.
-- SPENCER FOR HIRE - The $100.0 BLB Salary Cap grabbed another Colonial casualty this week. Former 1st Round pick and two time Brewmaster's Cup Champion Arlen Spencer was given his outright release by the organization before Opening Day in order to get below the ceiling. We anticipate great years in the future for Spencer and wish him nothing but the best.
-- KILLER MCQUEEN - The Closer turned Starter McQueen took the ball in Game 5 this week and turned in the first complete game of his career in the Colonials 8-4 win @ Baltimore. Further proving that anyone left-handed can hit in Baltimore, McQueen took an 8th inning offering from Jeronimo DeLacy and planted it in the seats. But this was no cheapshot... the McQueen bomb was measured at 406 feet.
-- NEW KID IN TOWN - Manny Gallegos got the call to join the team in Virginia only after Arlen Spencer was cut on Opening Day. Though the 1987 2nd Round pick didn't see action in Game 1, that would all change in the 2nd day of the season. Tied 4-4 in the bottom of the 9th and facing Batavia's uber-Closer Ken Bayer, the Colonials went Single (Chavez), IBB (Woodbury) and K (Maeda) when the pitcher's slot came up. The Manager turned to Gallegos to make his BLB debut right there. After watching a strike on the first pitch, he checked his swing on the second and got a generous ball on a nasty Bayer fastball. On the next pitch, the 23 year old Mexican born Gallegos stroked a line-drive single into left plating Chavez and earning himself a mob scene at first.
***
All in all, we pitched GREAT... and kind of hit like shit. Batavia is a GOOOOOD team. Great series there.
