  • *OFFICIAL* 1992 Import League Award PIMP Thread

Please use this thread to PIMP your Players for the Import League End-of-the-Season Awards. My suggestion is to limit the actual discussion in this thread and keep it to posts from GM pimping the wares of their players. Each post can be updated over the final two SIMs of the Regular Season. This will allow people to get their PIMPing in since we have a history of having some very eager voters once the polls open.

IMPORT LEAGUE ONLY in this thread.

The stats are the stats and you can interpret them how you see fit. The bottomline is that Chavez has been the best player on the best team in the BLB in 1992. He kept the team winning despite missing All-Star teammates Mel Woodbury and Dale O'Hegarty at different points in the season. He became only the 2nd player in BLB History (Francois Dupois - 1978) to hit at least 30 HR and steal 50 bases in the same season.

OK... you guys talked me into it. Mel Woodbury has won the Stout Slugger in all 4 of his seasons with the Virginia Colonials. Despite missing a month to injury, there is a ground swell of support to make "Doorbell" a 5-time winner. His numbers are certainly impressive... but the question is did he play enough to bring it home?

Last Call is such a tough race to vote for most of the time. While some voters can go blindly on straight SAVES... others will value those 'Pen workhorses who notch 80-90 games and anonymously get the job done. Ivan Olivo has really been both of those things for the Stout Champion Colonials this season. Besides converting 53 out of 53 Save Opportunities (and 63 straight going back to last season), he has worked in 76 total games being brought in in less than prototypical "closer spots" to shut the door in tied games late or stop the bleeding even if a Save wasn't on the table. Though he may put a few more guys on than your normal Superstar Closer... he does his job.

What are the knocks against Jenkins candidacy?

Didn't start enough games? Played for too good of a team? Benefited from being a Colonial?

Use whatever mark against him that you choose, but the bottomline is the this kid took the ball on the big stage and performed like a Vet.

MIKE MURDOCK: 1992 Stout Slugger Candidate
      BA: .329 (#3)
      SLG: .582 (#1)
      H: 178 (#5)
      HR: 32 (#2)

I can't disagree with anything that Clay said. Chavez has been the best player on the best team in the BLB. He hits for power, speed and average like no one else in the league did this season. The Stout Slugger Award isn't the MVP award of the BLB but it's probably the closest we have and it wouldn't be hard to argue Chavez as that.

Murdock had the best season of his career. He played majority of his games at catcher while also getting some "days off" at first base. He stole two bases this year, not 50. He doesn't hit in a park like Baltimore, but still lead the league in slugging % and was second in home runs. Chavez is surrounded by great hitters. Woodbury, Maeda, Phillips, Daly, O'Hegarty, the list goes on. Every D.C. hitter not named Murdock struggled this year. Normally he has some good OBP guys in front of him and protection behind but this year no one else held up their end of the bargain.

Chavez had an outstanding year for, basically, an All-Star team. For him to standout amongst that group, really says something. Murdock also had an outstanding year, for a .500 club with little to no help. They had different seasons for different teams but in my eyes, you could vote either way.

        H/9: 6.6 (#1)
        OPS: .592 (#2)

Not the best season in the IL but I think he deserves consideration for runner up. He strikes out a ton of guys and was second best in the league at opponents OPS. He didn't have the best fielding behind him this year and even worse, the D.C. bullpen was 9th in the IL and cost him a good amount of games. He is no Pancho but he might be second best.

CF Joe Rojas for IL 1992 Refreshing New Brew

          AVG
          : .306 - #1 rookies
          OBP: .378 - #1 rookies
          SLG: .434 - #2 rookies
          VORP: 37.1 - #2 rookies
          Hits: 165 - #1 rookies
          2B: 38 - #1 rookies
          HR: 9 - #4 rookies
          RBI: 75 - #2 rookies
          Runs: 84 - #1 rookies

          Fielding %: .997 - #2 in CF for BLB
Total chances: 341 - #5 in CF for BLB
Range: 2.65 - #5 in CF for BLB
          Zone R: +15.8 - #5 in CF for BLB
Def Eff: 1.06 - #6 in CF for BLB

Rojas has been Batavia's lead-off man and starting CF since day one of the 1992 BLB season. A 5th round pick in '88 Rojas slowly moved up the ranks before playing in 33 games in '91. When he found out he was going to be the everyday starter this season he was both exuberant and nervous, as was the Muckdogs GM. He got rid of those doubts by hitting early and hitting often and he never looked back.

All though he doesn't have the power of some of the other candidates he fits Batavia's offensive plan by being a hitting machine who get's on base and then scores runs, both reasons why Batavia is #1 in IL hits and #3 in IL runs.

Even more importantly to the Muckdogs, and what we believe pushes him over the edge for the award, is his defensive ability. He had 341 chances at the anchor position of the defense and only had 1 error. His ability to make plays and get outs dazzled the fans and let pitchers breath a sigh of relief all season long.

So not only did he make the offense successful, but his defense made his team successful. Simply put...with Rojas the Muckdogs have achieved their 1st winning season in franchise history and are on the brink of reaching the postseason.

CL Ken Bayer for IL 1992 Last Call Relief

            ERA: 1.88 - #2
            Saves: 42 - #2
            WHIP: .94 - #1
            K/BB: 4.70 - #1

A three time past Last Call award winner would probably be a lock for number four if there wasn't another team putting up video game numbers in the BLB. He rebounded from a poor '91 and was the last man to touch the ball at almost half of Batavia's victories this season. By the time it's all said and done he might go down as one of the best closers in BLB history.

MR Basil Petrohilos for IL 1992 Last Call Relief

            Games: 96 - #1
            Record: 9-1
            ERA: 2.65
            WHIP: 0.95 - #2
            K/BB: 4.70 #1

The dream winning plan in any game for Batavia was have the starter pitch 7 strong innings, bring Petro in for 2, then Bayer for the save. At only 23 years old this kid would be a dominant closer for any team other than Batavia.

We have finally clinched our first Porter title and its time to pimp the players that made it happen.

              Don Castor (1B)

              BA: .304 (#12)
              SLG: .578 (#2)
              H: 176 (#7)
              HR: 39 (#1)
              RBI: 151 (#1)
              R: 108 (#4)
              RC: 125 (#5)
              RC/27: 8.0 (#6)
              VORP: 60.6 (#6)
              PA/HR: 17.5 (#1)
              BB/K: 3.04 (#2)

              - At just 22 years old, Don Castor has to be considered one of, if not, the top power hitter in the league. He leads the league in home runs and has set a new single season record in RBI. He's a prototypical run producer and a huge part of our evolution as one of the better teams in the IL.

              Kyoden Kubota (C)

              BA: .320 (#5)
              SLG: .531 (#5)
              HR: 23 (#7)
              R: 95 (#6)
              RC: 127 (#4)
              RC/27: 10.2 (#2)
              VORP: 67.2 (#4)
              OBP: .460 (#1)
              BB: 127 (#2)

-Kyoden is the engine that moves this machine. His RC/27 is 2nd only to living legend, Mel Woodbury. A late season slump has found his average drop a bit, but he's still a top candidate for Stout Slugger. Not only does he lead the IL in OBP, he also top of the list in wOBA. Without him in our lineup, we are looking up at Batavia as Porter champs.

              Gil O'Moore (SP)

Along with most good pitchers in the IL, O'Moore is looking up to Herrera for an award he couldn't possibly win. However, for our team, O'Moore has been worth every penny and more. He's 13-4 with a 2.78 ERA and 189 K. He's been hurt for the final 3 weeks of the season but the great thing is, he'll be back for our playoff run.

                Pat Gates- IL New Brew

                Ranks among IL rookies:

                .283 BA- 3rd
                .365 OBP- 2nd
                .482 SLG- 1st
                .847 OPS- 1st
                .366 wOBA- 1st
                37.4 VORP- 1st

                145 Hits- 3rd
                30 2B- 2nd
                6 3B- 2nd
                20 HR- 1st
                96 RBI- 1st

                73 Runs- 3rd
                68 BB- 1st
                .199 ISO- 1st
                56 XBH- 1st

                247 TB- 1st

Simply put, Gates has been the best rookie hitter in the IL this season. In 3 different months, his OPS has been above .925. Unlike some other rookies, such as Batavia's Rojas, his home park isn't helping his case as he's actually a better hitter away from home. Compare the OPS of the two by home/road splits:

                Rojas- .929 Home/.715 Road
                Gates- .801 Home/.891 Road

Positionally, the only first baseman in the Import League having a better season than Gates is Baltimore's Don Castor.

There are some fine candidates for IL New Brew this season, but the best rookie hitter in the IL is obviously Pat Gates.

I'm gonna pimp one guy and yeah I know he won't win but dammit you gotta love the season Jared Williamson had. One of the worst teams in the league and he lost 6 games! He's a 20 game winner on any other team this year.
