Really? You don't see the argument at all? They have nearly identical VORPs, which is adjusted for position. Gates numbers at the plate are slightly better than Rojas.

I think it's a really close race, and Rojas is out this week.

Since the season started (which is what the award is based on)...Rojas is hitting .306/.378/.434 with 84 runs and 75 RBI's...plus he plays superior defense. Gates is hitting .282/.364/.487 with 71 runs and 93 RBI's.

Unless we are just going to base the award on HR's I honestly don't see the argument.
So, basically, you mean its a landslide.

I believe that Gates is a very good player, but I believe Rojas is better and this is why.

First off what numbers at the plate are better? Not average or on base percentage which I think would be the huge numbers. Slugging he has him beat with 11 more HR's which parlays into more RBI's. Rojas has scored more and has a slightly better RC stat.

As for being out...yes Rojas is out this week...but he also has 46 more AB's than Gates so maybe Gates can catch up to make them more even in comparison.

As for defense is CF more important than 1B? I feel it is. For Rojas to have a ZR of +15.6 is pretty darn good and it parleys into helping out the team. When Gates got stuck in LF for 16 games his was -2.1. Maybe some other voters can chime in on if defense plays a part in their decision. For me it does...maybe I'm in the minority though.

Will it be a 'landslide'...no way. Would I love to have Gates on my team...hell ya. Do I think Rojas should win for what he's contributed both offensively and defensively...yes. If he doesn't then he doesn't but I'll make sure to write up a strong case when the season is over.

Nan fell 15 AB's short of being qualified for ROY.

          He'd been a great candidate.

Castor v. Chavez v. Kubota v. Woodbury would have been a great race to watch in the IL had Woodbury been able to stay healthy this year.

Yeah, it's definitely going to be one of those "what do you value most" type of votes.

It does suck that the injury took Woodbury out of contention to keep his streak alive... however... I just hope he keeps hitting this well in the playoffs.

Damn, bad sim for us. Now two games back of Los Lunas with 13 left to play. Going to be a tight race to the finish.

So Denver is pretty much technically out of the race. Not that this is any different from three months ago, but it's tough to let sink in.

I hoped that my little sprites would get us to 85 wins. It's not impossible, but they'd have to play some amazing ball in the final two weeks, going 11-2 to get there against some tough competition in the DL.

Right now, I'd be happy with an 81-81 campaign. It was a season of four major bad decisions in the off-season (signing three relievers that wanted to close and trading away Williamson, not considering how valuable he could have been because of injuries. Speaking of...), injuries that hampered Zamarida and Browning for all of the year; took out Washington for the entire season; and erased Lubbers's opportunity to fill-in as a starter and progress; and forced a few not-so-reliable pitchers in Stevens, Jones, Corrigan (when he was around) and Barker to take starts in place of injured pitchers.

The good thing is it gave us a chance to give Jones and Stevens some BLB work. It allowed us to trade for Gallagher and Jimenez, two pitchers we think can handle themselves in Denver. It also allowed Alvarez to jump in and contribute as a rookie, set up the introduction of future SS Aiichiro Narita and made us realize that Chad Mullen is a CLOSER. And finally, Donnie Greene might have established himself as a bonafide ACE. Only time will tell.

A bad season has its bright spots. 1993 is another year.

A fairly well compensated closer at that.

He is, but he gets the job done better than any closer we've had since Merlin Thompson. I don't like overpaying relievers, but when a guy gets the job done, you gotta pay him.

We're still negotiating with Mullen, but he'll be back either way.

Actually, I'm just as worried about my guys giving it away. Losing Soto late didn't help. He was going to be in my playoff rotation if we made it.
