  • 1992 Import League All-Star Team

(NOTE: There are a couple snubs here... but we decided that we wanted every IL team to get a player in this year... so we made a couple tough decisions with the Manager's Picks. I know in the "big picture" this game doesn't mean much, but we did want to get them in. But... that being said... what fun are All-Star Games without snubs????)

After league-wide voting and internal discussions between the Import League Managers - Clay Shaver from the Brewer's Cup Champion Virginia Colonials and Pat McLaughlin from the IL Runner Up and game host Washington Bats - we are proud to announce the 28 Players that will represent the Import League in the July 7th match-up.

    The Offense

    Starters

    Kyoden Kubota
    Catcher
    Baltimore Bulldogs
    .366/.482/.626/1.108

In his first season in the IL, Kubota makes his 3rd All-Star team after a rock solid 1st half. A legit Stout Slugger candidate at the mid-way point, the addition of the lefty backstop has made the Bulldogs a real contender.

    Don Castor
    1B
    Baltimore Bulldogs
    .313/.412/.618/1.030

One of many fresh faces appearing in their 1st All-Star Game, Castor's big bat will be on display in what could be the first of many Mid-Summer Classics.

    Hector Chavez
    2B
    Virginia Colonials
    .339/.405/.561/.966

Chavez makes his second straight All-Star Game on a truly 5-tool first half. The catalyst in the high-powered Colonials' offense, Chavez could be a mainstay at 2B for years to come.

    Jermaine Ednams
    Shortstop
    Batavia Muckdogs
    .282/.377/.442/.819

The 3rd appearance for Ednams in his 4th professional season, the speedy lefty has helped the Muckdogs hold down the IL Wildcard lead going into the All-Star Break.

    Yoritoki Maeda
    3B
    Virginia Colonials
    .299/.404/.518/.922

A unanimous selection to the IL Team, Maeda, who just signed a lucrative 7 year deal to stay in Virginia, makes his 2nd All-Star Team.

    Loren Wallace
    OF
    Baltimore Bulldogs
    .380/.465/.574/1.039

Wallace makes his 2nd straight All-Star Game, however, a second injury of the season will keep him on the bench despite his unanimous selection.

    Doug Bryant
    OF
    Windy City Playboys
    .311/.365/.504/.868

A bright spot in an otherwise disappointing season in Chicago, Doug Bryant makes his 1st All-Star Game in 1992.

    Jerry Daly
    OF
    Virginia Colonials
    .304/.387/.473/.860

The 1991 IL Refreshing New Brew adds to his trophy case with his first election to the All-Star Game. The 22-year old speedster leads the league with 31 SBs and 10 triples.

    The Bench

    Shelby Houck (C - Morgantown Mohawks) - 2nd All-Star Game
    Mike Murdock (1B - Washington Bats) - 4th All-Star Game
Cristobal Ramirez (SS - Wilmington Wildcats) - 1st All-Star Game
    Dale O'Hegarty (SS - Virginia Colonials) - 7th All-Star Game
Joe Rojas (OF - Batavia Muckdogs) - 1st All-Star Game
Mel "Doorbell" Woodbury (OF - Virginia Colonials) - 8th All-Star Game
Chad Austin (OF - Davenport Brawlers) - 1st All-Star Game

    The Pitchers

    Starters

    Doug Miles
    Starter
    Philadelphia Freedom
    6-2 - 1.76 ERA - 101/16 K/BB - 0.80 WHIP

The top vote getter among IL Starters, Miles grabs his 3rd straight All-Star Game nod and will have the likely inside track to get the ball to start the game.

    Gil O'Moore
    Starter
    Baltimore Bulldogs
    8-0 - 2.14 ERA - 102/29 K/BB - 1.08 WHIP

Like Kubota, O'Moore makes the jump to the IL and grabs an All-Star spot in his first season. This will be the two-time DL Pale Ale Pitcher's 8th All-Star Game.

    Hector "Blade" Pagan
    Starter
    Wilmington Wildcats
    8-4 - 2.76 ERA - 101/60 - 1.35 WHIP

A 1st time All-Star and a bit of a surprise in grabbing the 3rd Automatic Election through balloting, looks to still have his best seasons ahead of him.

    Relievers

    Ken Bayer
    Closer
    Batavia Muckdogs
    2-3 - 19 Saves (0 BS) - 1.49 ERA

Bayer makes his 4th All-Star appearance after a unanimous election to the club.

    Ivan Olivo
    Closer
    Virginia Colonials
    1-1 - 23 Saves (0 BS) - 0.23 ERA

The Colonials Closer earns his 1st All-Star on the heels of his 1991 Last Call Relief Award (Tied with Shawn Mills).

    Sammy Scott
    Reliever
    Virginia Colonials
    1-0 - 44 Games - 2.01 ERA

Scott returns to the All-Star Game (his 2nd) after a great 1st half in the Set-up role in Virginia.

    The Bullpen
Jerry Morgan (SP - Virginia Colonials) - 1st All-Star Game
Pat Dimmick (SP - Los Alamos Bandits) - 1st All-Star Game
Pancho "Ironfist" Herrera (SP - Virginia Colonials) - 4th All-Star Game
Nate "The Skull" Magness (SP - Virginia Colonials) - 3rd All-Star Game
Derrick Tucker (SP - Washington Bats) - 1st All-Star Game
Don "Dutch" Jones (RP - California Kodiaks) - 1st All-Star Game
John Cantrell (RP - Carolina Tobs) - 1st All-Star Game

    The Great One!

    To many rings to count...

Why do we vote for 5 relief pitchers if we aren't taking the Top 5? I never really paid much attention to it in the past, so I'm not sure if we've always done things that way.

List looks good. Surprised to see Ramirez on there, but it's nice to see all the teams represented.

Nevermind, I just actually read the first post in the voting thread. I guess I just always assumed the Top 5 made it for SP and RP. Team looks good. Should easily handle the DL.

Yeah, the Pitching thing is where it gets dicey.

We basically swapped Crossman (BAT) and Rogers (WIL) for Jones (CAL) and Cantrell (CAR) to make sure we got someone from every team.

Of course, the one year I finally get to host the game, I don't even have a starter.

          Fitting.
          Wilmington Wildcats- 2057-
          Seattle Pilots- 2017-2041
          Washington Bats - 1979-2013

            Nice!

I'm with Sully though. Where's MR's Crossman and Rodgers? Talk about managerial bias!

I'd like to see Virgina play an All Star team made up of the remaining BLB teams.

No you swiped Cross and Rogers for Magness and Herrera.

Thanks guys... I didn't expect the Kodiaks to get any players this year, but if you had to choose one, Jones was the guy to take.

He's been a great find since picking him up in an offseason trade with Pawtucket.
                  California Kodiaks - GM - 1982-2013
                  Brewmaster's Cups: 1987
                  Import League Champions: 1987, 1989

Technically, Pancho and Crossman both had the same number of votes for an Auto Spot (one more than Rogers).

It's really Tucker who stole the spot, but Diesel was crying like a woman.

Honestly, just went RP for RP. When we found Jones and Cantrell, we took out the two RP Manager Picks.

Also, for the record, the very last position player cut (and if we could do an injury replacement for Wallace) was Nan.

That could be done in an alternate universe file.

I guess the one pick that does look odd to me is Woodbury, but he did miss 4 weeks. Give him those 4 weeks and he's probably voted in as a starter.

Rogers was snubbed, no doubt, but I'd rather see all teams represented and that was accomplished so I can't complain too much. Yeah, sure, Clay could've given up one of the 10 spots his Colonials took...but aside from Woodbury, they all deserve to be there.

Woodbury got in as "Next 2 OF"

We also opted for 15 hitters and 13 pitchers because the Game doesn't change pitchers as often as hitters in the ASG... so we wanted to maximize participation.

Ah, I didn't notice that. I just remembered him having 2 votes. Like I said, it's Mel Woodbury. He deserves it. He's missed 4 weeks and has numbers better than most of the IL's OFs. It's just not numbers you're used to seeing from him.

Ya the Tucker pick is even worse than the 10 Colonials. But I guess if I want to pick the team then I need to win the games.
