This Ale race is absolutely fascinating. It will be interesting to see if there is an "arms" race leading up to the trade deadline between them as they strive to achieve mutually assured destruction.

Because there's nothing else to talk about in Syracuse, I want to take a second to look at Geoff Scott's week a little closer...

In one week... and it's not like it's the first month of the season or that Scott is a utility guy... so, in one week... only 25 at bats, Geoff:

      - raised his batting average 34 points, from .297 to .331
      - raised his slugging percentage 82 points from .514 to .596
      - raised his OPS 97 points from .928 to 1.025

Those numbers are unbelievable to me. He also hit four more home runs, giving him 8 in his last 50 ABs over 12 games. I'm sure water will find it's level, but a pretty amazing week.

A couple notable events for The Champs this week....

          - On the heals of locking down Pancho Herrera for the rest of his 20's, the Colonials sign a 7 year - $75.0 deal with Yoritoki "Little Boy" Maeda - buying out his final year of arbitration and locking down the 26 year old through his prime years (he'll be 33 at contract's end). Maeda, along with Hector Chavez, have become lynch-pins in this offense and that role will increase substantially with the inevitable loss of the aging Mel Woodbury.

          - 6th overall pick and hot prospect Gene Legere (BA #27) followed up an impressive professional debut by blowing out his hamstring in his second outing and getting shutdown for the rest of the season. The kid put in a lot of innings at en route to his 2nd straight NCAA Title. We anticipate Legere being one of the next great Virginia arms - so we're hoping this injury is just a hiccup.

          - Happy 33rd Birthday today to "Mr Colonial" Danny Nelson! The 1979 IL New Brew is settling into his role as Pinch Hitter and Clubhouse Leader for the young Colonials. He recently signed a 4-year extension that will likely take him into his transition into the front-office.

            1. Sucks about Legere. Really like the kid. Hopefully, he comes back the same. Hamstrings shouldn't affect much.

            2. Would be awesome if you could actually offer a guy like Nelson a role on the team. OOTP needs to look at that. Offer long time players that would take consultant jobs or base coach jobs. Something that could start off as a minor thing that's only available to recently retired players. Maybe they don't have deep ratings or any ratings at all. But just to have them around. And then perhaps a handful will decide every couple years or so that they want to try something else.

They can send an email stating: "I want to try my hand at being a Pitching Coach, so I wanted to inform you that I will be leaving my position as Team Consultant. Thank you."

            That would be awesome.

That would be neat touch. I'm hoping he becomes a Coach and I can get him in my system.

It may be totally JJ, but I'm retiring #56 when Nelson is done. Should he have had a greater career? Most likely. But, he's a Colonial through and through and I'm willing to lock up a Roster Spot for him until he's ready to hang 'em up.
