Any thoughts, feelings, plans, rumors, surprises at just about the quarter mark of the season?

    ****

    In Virginia....

    What We Like:

-- Yoritoki Maeda looks appears to be putting together a Stout Slugger level season. With some of the other bats a little colder, Maeda has been a saving grace for us this season.

-- Nate "The Skull" Magness may be hitting his prime. Though it's hard to say "quietly" because I've been yacking about him for 10 years, but Magness - who has quietly put up 16 wins in 5 separate seasons - is 5-0 with a 2.76 ERA to anchor the backside of the rotation.

-- The Fresh Blood is contributing. MacPherson and rookie Yamauchi have been great in their 1B platoon. Yamauchi's 9 HRs and 1.037 OPS have to have him among the leaders in the New Brew conversation. Lonnie Scott, while not fantastic with the stick, has had some timely hits and sound defense.

-- Sammy Scott and Ivan Olivo have been pretty lockdown, airtight in the 8-9 role. While Olivo has had a taste of Todd Jones in him putting a few too many batter on to create drama, but when push comes to shove, he slams the door shut.

    Surprises:

-- Rod Phillips is having a statistically unique season. His BA is a paltry .185, but he has an OBP of .409 and is on pace to break the single-season record for free passes.

-- Dale O'Hegarty came back from a Spring Training injury to a resounding "meh". While his .369 OBP is respectable, a .210 avg doesn't cut it in the lead-off spot... especially for $16.0 per.

-- Mel Woodbury is still the best in the business... but a slow start has him in the unfamiliar role as a contributor instead of the straw that stirs the drink. Interesting sidenote, for only the 2nd time in my 12 seasons in the BLB, Woodbury is actually willing to negotiate an extension right now despite having a full season left on his deal. The only other player to ever negotiate with me prior to his last season is Danny Nelson about 6 years ago.

    The Next Quarter:

-- I don't foresee any major changes in the next 40 games, however, the biggest thing we're watching right now is the development of Gus Jenkins in AAA. He just picked up more points from OSA in the last two SIMs (from 5-5-5 to 5-6-6). He's still not asking to come up yet, but he may be impossible to keep down all season.
    The Great One!

    To many rings to count...

After that trade, I have a feeling a lot of DL teams are thinking the same thing, Clay.

Bring it, Shaver. I'm eagerly looking forward to sweeping you in the Brewmasters.

Assuming you can get past Philly, that is.

Yes, you and your 1-man rotation certainly have everyone quaking about meeting you in a series. Why don't you get a 2nd starter under 4.00 ERA before you start planning parades?

Pittsburgh, of course... Baltimore is in hiding since Noon today. He was very froggy around 11:59, then he went radio silent. Weird.

                          In Hartford....
                          17-21 Overall 6.0 GB

                          What We Like:

-- Starters ERA - 3.58 (3rd DL) Perhaps the weakest part of the team since I took over the franchise, we finally look to be on the right track. In the past, if you asked a fan to name the Whalers starting rotation they'd instantly give you an answer of Mapalo and Lindsey. After that? Good luck. The rebuilt rotation is looking solid. Lindsey (4-1 2.97) is now the undisputed Ace of the staff. Pricey free agent pick-up Curt Goodwin (3-2 2.98) has (some would say) overachieved as a #2. Don McDonald (1-2, 3.28) and the ageless Cris Villazon (3-2 4.42) acquired in deals that sent out Mapalo and SS Manny Rivera have solidified the 3 and 4 spots. Which brings us to...

-- Rookie SP Tim Godron who has put up impressive numbers as a rookie after winning the #5 job in Spring Training. The 21 year old has posted a 2.83 ERA in 35 IP w/ a 2-to-1 K-BB ratio and a 1.31 WHIP. Management is taking in Godron's early success with cautious optimism, hoping he can maintain his fast start, but ready to protect their young rising star.

-- A Young, Promising Bullpen that averages just 26 years old, has provided some stability. Don Elliott, acquired in the Mapalo deal, has brought stability to the closers role with a 3.86 ERA, and 8 saves. Anibal Rivera, Julian Rodriguez, Kiichi Suzuki, Brad Sanford and Anastasio Lopez have all held their own while growing into their expanded responsibilities.

-- Ed Andrew's Big Bat has kept an anemic Whaler's offense afloat. Shopped in the offseason for pitching, management ultimately decided to move out SS Manny Rivera and hold onto Andrew. The move has paid off as Andrew leads the team in homeruns (9) and RBI's (29) despite almost no protection in the line-up.

-- Chuck Durham, Rising Star? Entering his 3rd full season as Hartford's starting 2B, Durham is just 22 years old. His versatility (and a lack of other options) has seen Durham bat anywhere from leadoff to #5 in the Whaler's everyday line-up. The youngster has handled it well, posting a BA of .314 as a BLBer. It may just be a matter of time before Durham is mentioned in the same breath as the top tier 2B in the BLB.

                          Disappointments:

-- Jack Curry, Odd Man Out Following a season in which he anchored Hartford's bullpen, more with his consistency and determination than his statistics, Curry has struggled this season posting an ERA over 6.00 to start the season. In a difficult move, Hartford has option Curry to AAA and brought up promising MR Anastasio Lopez who has been successful in limited BLB action.

-- Offensive Offense The Whalers ranked in (or at) the bottom of every major hitting category in the DL. Other than Andrew, Durham and surprisingly effective rookie OF/DH Cai-fei Niu, a starting line-up that trots out 6 everyday players batting below .250 isn't going to see much success. Help may be on the way as Hartford's core of young, multi-faceted OF's makes it way up the pipeline.

                          Players to Watch For:
                          1. OF Cai-fei Nui (BLB)
                          2. OF Naotatsu Matsumoto (AA)
                          3. OF Abelando Hernndez (AA)
                          4. OF Amri Sau (A)
                          5. CL Julin Ramrez (A)
                          6. C Doug Brown (AA)
                          7. CL Ernie Ferguson (AAA)
                          8. C Ral Rodrguez (AAA)
                          9. MR Pancho Snchez (AA)
                          10. SP Willie Harris (#7 pick)

                            Lets see quarter pole Pawtucket:

                            The good:

                            New Guys:

2B Ral Zamora- putting up an allstar year.
P Hctor Snchez- little more down to earth, but giving us quality middle RP

                            Old Guys:
Aurillo & Gugierrez- 10-2 combined. Nice 1-2 combo. Having Ocampo/ Herrera at #3/#4 not horrible either

                            Core:
1B Carmem Chamissa- getting better every year and wont kill the budget next few years.
3B 'Slider' Gonazlez- just being himself.
The 3 Horsemen Hill/Gallo/Phillips- 4-0 15 Saves. Wow the bullpen has come along way since 89!

                            What sucks so far:

C Hector Gonzlez- a bit better in May, but NO HOMERUNS SO FAR??
P Raul Guzman- 5.93 ERA. N#6 starter. Acts like a little bitch. Might take a little trip to minors again. It's like I have to ground him.
P Carter Griffin- He's just an asshole. Waylon Morgan coming up early cuz of him.

                            Summary

About where we should be. Defense has been great and some unsung heros on the roster IF T.Rogers/OF M.Turcotte stepping up. May need to tweak one or two positions, but not expecting to go crazy.
