Cook just pitched as expected in the minors and has been great as a starter in the BLB. His WHIP is more a result of the outings he made as a reliever. He's made five starts since and has thrown 8 innings in four of them. He threw 7.2 in the other.

      Rod Coston
      Undrafted - 1985
      Right Fielder (L)

Speed and defense. Due to the injuries of Hector Reyna, Larry Fitzsymons, Miguel Angel Padilla, Jose Llombart and the trade of Larry Headington, supplies are limited. Coston might be able to steal a few bags and slap a single here and there against RH pitching. Not expecting the world. Mostly defense.

I feel like I need to give a little love to third baseman Ivan Ontiveros, a first round pick way back in 1983. I came in right after that draft, but Ontiveros had unbelievable ratings and a ton of potential before missing 12 months to injury during his second professional season.

Nearly 10 years later, Ontiveros has all the intangibles and none of the contact. He actually got a September call up last year but didn't get any ABs, but in his first week, he hit a HR and finished with a .723 OPS. This guy has been just bad enough to be stuck in my minors for 9 years now, and the sad thing is, he may earn a spot in 93 if he has a decent summer. Great eye, power, decent in the field...

But, for the time being, here's to Ivan Ontiveros, the hot shot first rounder who became a minor league journeyman and finally got his chance.

Since the rosters have expanded, the Tobs have called up two players from AAA Winston-Salem:

          1B Ismael Reyes

Currently the #19 prospect in the BLB (3rd in the Tobs' system), Reyes has hit .348 with 22 HRs and a 1.009 OPS this season in AAA. Originally drafted by the Baltimore Bulldogs with the 9th overall pick of the 1988 draft, the Tobs acquired Reyes in a deal involving Akira Abe.

          2B Adrian Romero

Romero is currently #47 in the BA Top 100 (6th in Carolina's system) and has hit .306 for the AAA Warthogs this season. Selected by the Tobs with the 10th overall selection in the 1989 draft, Romero has shown the ability to hit at every level so far in his career.

Always thought that was a great trade for you. We'll probably be cursing Baltimore's name on this one. I'm hoping Abe is a bust this week in your series vs the Brawlers. Maybe he needs a taste of the BLB bench first?

All kidding aside, he appears to be a sure thing which is bad news for all of us Bockites.

With Castor in the fold, I don't think you can fault Baltimore regardless of how Reyes turns out. He already has a superstar at that position. We're still hoping to find some competent BLB-level players here in Carolina.

While Reyes and Romero are the two "headliners" making their debuts in Carolina this week, CF Pete Foster will also most likely be part of our lineup. He's never been in my organizational top 20, but he's hit at every level so far and is a plus fielder and base runner. Might as well see what he can do seeing as how we have nothing to play for.

Call me Linty, but I can't help but think Brown was rushed to the majors way too quickly.

He's getting a few starts in September. He crushes lefties. I platoon in left field.

MacKnight has sucked in the second half. If Brown hits in September, he takes MacKnight's job for the postseason.

Previously profiled here as last year's receipient of our Minor League Player of the Year award. We're still not sure if he can do anything at the BLB level, but he posted a .421 | .471 - OBP | SLG combination in his 1st full season of AAA, so he earned his callup.

Brought over from Dallas in the Dani Alvarez deal. Not expecting him to see much playing time, but he'll get some spot starts and PH duties to get a little experience. We expect him to break with the big club after ST next season.

Got 2 top 100's gonna play the whole month.

Angelo Hernandez who is joining fellow newbie Eric Draves who was brought up a few weeks ago and is playing well.

Also coming up is Clarence Willis who just seems like he will be not quite a star but a high "basement" guy with an occaisonal all star appearance here and there.

                          1B Clancy Chatfield

Drafted 1986 second round, 8th pick. 1B prospect in Pawtucket and part of one of greatest draft classes in Pawtucket's history that included CF Samuel Helmrich (1st round), P Manny Ocampo (6th round) & even LF Arlen Joyner (4th round)

This call-up is just a taste of the big league. Will spend next season or 2 in AAA being groomed for either 1B or DH at the major league level. We are in no hurry. Fantastic year in AAA that included a .310 ave/ 31HR/ VORP 49.6.
