Who's making the jump this year into The Show!

    Discuss here...

  • #2

    Cristián Rivera

Currently at #63 on the prospect list is sticking with the team after spring training. Partly because he finally is expecting to be in the big leagues, and partly because we have no middle infielders. His contact will be a 7, it's a 5 now so he should at least not embarrass himself as he grows into his position.

The good news is his defensive ratings all took a jump so he won't be as much of a liability as we feared.

I really liked Rivera last year. I tried on more than one occasion to pry him away from Pawtucket. I'm quite upset that during his top prospect purge, I was unable to land any of them.

Rivera was actually a player from Pittsburgh involving Rex Morgan. I loved him at the time and still do. I just needed pitching (Bullpen more) at the time and ended up landing 3 young good pitchers.

I hope he does well in the big show, but dont regret the deal one bit.

Manny Martinez will be making his debut for the Kodiaks this week.

Martinez, 27, has finally made his way up the organizational ladder since being drafted in the fifth round of the 1986 draft.

Last year at AA Sacramento, Manny earned his first All-Star selection and Pitcher of the Year honor when he went 16-4 with a 1.73 ERA in 172 IP while striking out a career high 169 hitters.

Martinez's 1.73 ERA is the single season record for ERA in the Lautering Union.

So far in 1992, Martinez is 2-0 with a 2.14 ERA in 21 innings at AAA Bakersfield.

My scout didn't like him much until after I traded him. Good move by you, though Morgan is still awesome.

Yeah, this trade really worked on both ends though I ended up flipping Rivera for pitching. I still have some hope with Calhoun also

                SP Tim Godron

Currently the #19 prospect in the BLB, Godron was drafted 19th overall out of HS in 1988. Originally targeted to hit the BLB in 1993, Godron seized the opportunity given to him in Spring Training to win the #5 spot in the rotation. After 2 years at single A Guilford and 3 in AA Middletown, it appears Godron has some staying power at the top level. He currently sports a 1-2 record, a 2.42 ERA, a 1.16 WHIP in 22.1 IP and a nearly 3-1 K/BB ratio.

Glad I was patient with him. With my terrible rotation and staff I was tempted several times to move him up. With my newly created pitching depth I also have no problem sliding him back down to AAA should he hit some bumps.

CF Artie Dickerson made the opening day roster. A 6th round pick in the '88 draft, Artie finally came into his own last season while playing for our AAA affiliate in Boulder City. We only hope it's not too late. The scouts say he's reached his full potential and will be an above-average player for a long time. But he's only hitting .207 at the moment. Hitting Coach Hernando Rojas is waking him up in the morning and tucking him in at night.

LF/DH Ramao Cavadas also made the opening day roster. Management freely admits to rushing last year's 1st round pick. He's off to a slow start, but we're riding this horse to the bitter end.

Artie seems a little unconfortable in that uniform. I wonder why? You do know he's look WAY better in solid blue

He's cool with blue. But he's not a fan of sweater vests.

Artie will never be happy now. Now if he played in the northeast......

                          SP Curt Tanner

Brought over in the trade with Maine for Jud Cobb it's time to see what the 23 year old can do. So far this season in AAA he's 2-1 with a 0.33 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 21-5 K to BB.

                            Victor Escamilla (OF)

-Chosen as the 11th pick in the 1990 draft, Escamilla was named the #8 prospect at the beginning of the 1992 season. Victor has been called up to replace Coy McPherson (OF), as McPherson has been damn near completely ineffectual this year. Although not as accomplished or polished as Bulldogs' star, Loren Wallace was at the time of his promotion, Escamilla is still expected to learn from Wallace and Sato and become another great outfielder groomed within the Bulldogs' minor league system.

                            Joe Soriano (SP)

-Born in Santiago de Cuba, Soriano is considered the 7th best prospect in the Baltimore farm system. A 5th round pick in the 1987 draft, Soriano is being called up to give the bullpen an extra left-handed arm to deal with the lefty-heavy lineups found across the BLB. With a nice slider and very good change-up, Soriano may also find himself spot starting at various times during the season.

                              Jerry Robins(2B)

-Chosen as the 7th pick in the 10th round in 1987, expectations for Jerry has been considered very low to say the least. Still this kids high drive has lead to steady improvements during his minor league career including a big leap from A to AAA in 1989. Was on the trading block past few seasons, but only limited interest has lead to Jerry hanging around in AAA. After a hot start, the Jimmy Joy injury forced managements hands to least give the kid a call up. Right now he's platooning with another overachiever (Toby Rodgers) and have to say been a pleasant suprise batting .325 in 40 AB.

Not sure this kid will stay up for the long haul, but wanted to at least give props for making a solid contribution for his time up. Not many 10th round picks get to play in the big show

EDIT: He has played in limited action past few seasons. So lets just say its a long overdue tribute to a nice kid.
