Seems like someone else made similar statements not too long ago. Hmm. Oh yeah,

        • I would vote Latham into the Hall of Real Good. All time numbers don't mean shit to me at this point since the league is so young. Especially stolen base numbers from the early days. Everyone stole 60 bases back then.

I also don't like the fact that he only drove in 100 RBI ONCE, and that was playing in the greatest hitters park in league history. Yeah RBI is a "situational" stat, but if you play 10 years and you're supposedly a legend, you manage more than one season of over 100 RBI.

All star appearances don't mean a ton for me, and golden gloves Clay already alluded to. To me his career looks like a guy who did it really good for a real long time. He accumulated a lot of stats, but I try to think that in 50 seasons would we look at him and go, "How the fuck did this guy get in?"

In hindsight, it was very inconsistent of me to not vote for Rumsey.

He was on my bubble, but I eventually dropped him preferring to go with guys that had more than two great seasons.

Not to knock his vote. I think a good case can be made for him. He had two of the best pitching seasons an old man could ever have. But, I just decided I couldn't go with him.

So then we could hear you say: "I told you so."

              Yea, I pass!

Hmm, I know what you're getting at here, but I think that even if the best guy doesn't always win, a very good fielder does. It's not like the MLB where you get guys that shouldn't even be standing next to the Top 5 fielders list. At least the game knows to go with someone good. I think Latham might not have always been the best fielder during his time, but he was without a doubt one of the best and that's just as important as having hardware.

From 81 - 88 (the years we have Win Shares available) Latham ranks 13th amongst all OFers in Fielding Win Shares.
