How accurate? They're a decent ballpark figure. You can put in a smaller offer and get the guy for less, but you risk losing your arb hearing and you can actually end up paying more than the estimate. So, it's possible to end up paying some guys less than the estimate and some guys more. I'm not sure that really answers your question.

I'm not 100% sure what you meam by projected budget, but the estimated arb figures are included in your projected payroll 1992 figure.

AGREE on the ruling thing. Last season Bob Burleson gained an extra 1.5 million from my stupidity.

That's what killed me in the Baltimore Bailout. I thought getting a guy who was hot would translate into wins for us. Nope. Noted to self: Don't do dumb shit like that anymore.

I look for guys that fit a team identity now. If you look at my 1991 roster, there is only about $7 million of FA on the roster (Campo, Lacy, and Gonzalez), everyone else is a trade or homegrown. I may not have the big name trades, but bringing in guys like Nathan, Abe, Lorral, Sato, Rodenas, George, Dynes, DeLacy, Krsnich, O'Fallon and Grady have all paid dividends over the last two years.

Everyone sees what I gain in hitting, but ignores what I lose in pitching. Winning in Baltimore, with this t-ball stadium, is no easy feat despite the money. Even the worst teams always have a fighting chance because you can f'n spit a home run into right field and that one home run can change the game.

With all of that being said, there are really only 3 guys out there that I really want to sign. Since I've got a couple of decent offensive players in the pipeline, I really don't see my payroll going over 70 million this year. I've got a pretty young nucleus that I'm happy with.

Obviously, I don't see myself winning 90+ wins with a $43 million team, but I'm quite sure I can stay competitive even if I spend just $25 million in FA.

I try to sign one impact F/A a year if it fits. I usually do the rest with trades.

I think my future appears to be a core group on offense with 1-2 mercenaries each year. As for pitching, I did resign my veteran SP, but at 60% the price. Next year he will be history. I assume Aurillo will be around for a bit, but he's still only 31.
