After the last month of the season, I think the only two teams that could beat you in their dreams are Washington and Pawtucket. Everyone else dreams about just getting the chance to play you and then losing.
Personally, I only see two teams that can take down Virginia. Unfortunately for them, they play eachother in the first round.
Again, good luck Zabel.
Wilmington Wildcats- 2057- Seattle Pilots- 2017-2041 Washington Bats - 1979-2013
I'll be shocked if I make it out of the first round.
That's what I was going to say!
We're down a starter (Sumita), Coker is still on the shelf, Iliquez is still being a whiny bitch, and Old Blue Simmonds has spent most of the last two months getting lit up. Combine that with our woeful road record and yeah, I don't see us beating a 94-win team in the first round of the playoffs.
I'm sure stranger things have happened though. I just can't think of any right now.
After a series of closed door meetings, the Virginia Colonials have announced their rotation and lineup for their Wildcard Round series with the Davenport Brawlers.
After using a 6-man rotation for the bulk of the season, the Colonials will use a tight 4-man rotation in the 1st Round.
Game 1 - Pancho "Ironfist" Herrera (R) - The IL Triple Crown Winner will get the ball in the Game 1 after taking the final week off to be ready for their run with take his 21 win season into play in the first game at home.
Game 2 - Jayson McQueen (L) - The 15 game winner was thought to be the Closer of the future in Virginia when he came into the league with his blazing 101 MPH fastball. Bouncing back and forth between the Pen and the Rotation early in his career, the 28 year old lefty was locked into a long-term deal in 1990 and should figure prominently if Virginia is to make a long run.
Game 3 - Jerry Morgan (R) - Morgan may be "the best pitcher that you don't know about" right now in the BLB. With 17 wins this year on the heels of two straight 15 win seasons, Morgan gets the important role of not only the first Road Start, but potential Game 7 Starter. Morgan has been solid in the Colonials last two post-season runs and will need to be huge in '91.
Game 4 - Nate "The Skull" Magness (L) - Hard to believe it's been 8 years since the Colonials made "The Skull" the #1 overall pick in 1983. Magness turned in his 5th 16-win season in 1991. Magness will look to bounce back from a rough '90 Playoff performance and will need to prove he was the right choice to make the rotation.
Who's Out?
Ivan Perez - 12 wins as a Starter in 1991, Perez will move the bullpen and likely draw the #1 MR spot for the playoffs. Rumors circulating around the clubhouse say that Perez may be the odd-man out in 1992 when the Colonials are forced to make some tough decisions to make the new BLB Salary Cap.
Arlen Spencer - A #5 overall pick and once one of the Top Prospects in the organization, many had thought Spencer's career may end up in the dreaded AAAA mode (or Washington Single A). Instead Spencer played a huge role this year as the all important #6 starter and was rewarded with 11 wins.
I love stealing ideas...formats....girlfriends...etc.
Playoff rotation (listed alphabetically):
Martin Carlton (R) - The "Eager Beaver" continues to get better with age. Contract talks between the Bats and Carlton have stalled for the past month but it hasn't effected his play on the field. Although management is keeping their cards close, it is widely believed that Carlton will be given the ball for Game One.
Tommy Lang (R) - Talk about motivation. Last year, Lang had a 4.52 ERA for the Bats. This season, in a contract year, he finished with a 3.14 ERA, his best since '83. Although contract negotiations continue, it is widely believe that Lang will use his regular season and this playoff apperance as a chance to cash in during Free-Agency. The Bats are fine with letting him walk if continues to play at such a high level.
Anselmo Mapalo (L) - After 14-years in Hartford, Mapalo was brought in by Washington for this very reason. A legit lefty starter to face the lefty heavy lineups in Philly. Marlon Dixon, Orinosuke Takahashi, Geoff "Don't call me George" Scott and Jim Newlin have their work cut out for them against the savvy vet. His days in the BLB are numbered, so I'm sure Mapalo will give it his all.
Derrek Tucker (R) - The youngster had a great showing in last year's playoffs, three starts, 25 Ks, 21 IP, 4 ER. He will look to build on that experience by trying to reach his first ever Brewmaster's.
Who is out?
P.J. Brooks - Interesting situation. After being a middle reliever his entire minor league career, and after one successful season in the bigs, he begged and pleaded with management to move him to the rotation. When they finally granted his request, he flourished last year and this year as a starter. Then, he tells management that he wants to move back to the pen. Which worked out perfectly for the Bats, with the intent to move to a four-man rotation in the playoffs. To prepare, he was moved to the bullpen for the final two weeks of the season, where he came in and got four wins in his seven appearances.
Manny Duran - The youngster was brought up to the bigs at the start of summer so the Bats could commit to the six-man rotation. He likely won't be used much in the post-season however because his relief experience is limited.
What about the pen?
Roger Simonds - CL - After sharing duties for majority of the season, the Bats were given more defined roles in the month of September, and that is where Simonds reclaimed his old job back. He is a Free-Agent at season's end and has already told management he would like to explore his options during the Winter.
Cristian Ramirez - Lefty SU - Ramirez and Matthews (below) have teamed share set-up duties. Year in, year out, they have flourished in this shared role.
River Matthews - Righty SU - Like Ramirez, Matthews has been in this role for a long time. No complaints. Doesn't desire to be the closer. Continues to get it done.
Jerry Chase - Righty MR - The youngest reliever on the staff had a great rookie campaign. Some sources believe he is the closer of the future.
Joe Alveraz - Lefty MR - From future closer to a former closer, Alveraz celebrated his 300th save just a month ago. However, after earning that milestone, he was moved to middle relief to get prepared for his playoff role. So far, no complaints.
Caleb Alston - Righty MR - "Tigger" is JAG. But very solid. Won't be counted on a ton but he has boasted a sub 2.50 ERA the past two years.
Wilmington Wildcats- 2057- Seattle Pilots- 2017-2041 Washington Bats - 1979-2013
While tweaking my roster for the playoffs I noticed not a whole lot of playoff experience within my rotation.
On the same subject looks like 38 year old Alonzo Gugierrez has never been on a playoff roster. Glad he can get in there close to the end of his career
4 man staff (in no order)
SP Alonzo Gugierrez ** crafty veteran
SP Pancho Herrera ** just having a great second half
SP Joe 'Bluto' Aurillo ** most experienced on pawtucket staff
SP Manny Ocampo ** early year call up gets a spot!
Raul vs Aurillo was a very tough choice since Raul played so well down the stretch (4-1 2.62 ERA), but going the veteran lefty instead. Lets see how this plays out.
Sin City took the season series 7-5 versus Pawtucket. This has been a much different Patriot team since around Mid-August. Sin City just swept the 1990 Brewmaster Champions.
Sin City seems to match up well against the upstarts so sticking with the Lou Holtz theme:
SinCity 4-3
IL Championship:
No reason at all how I see Virginia losing this series. None. And since I think that .....
