True, from a certain point of view. Some might say it took you a couple of years to move past this deal. You were 33-25 at the point you made the deal at the end of May 1988. You went 46-58 the rest of the way. The next season you were an even .500, 81-81. 1990 and so far in 1991 - you're 25 games above .500.

Besides your performance is only one part of the equation, and perhaps the less significant piece. The crux of the deal was the financial flexibility given to California. Since the deal, CAL is 37 games above .500 and has been to a Brewmaster's Championship series. Scoreboard.

You have to love all of the attention on Virginia. In another season where Virginia isn't putting up "BALCO" type numbers, Philly is in all the headlines because you're having a ridiculously good season too.

Nice to be under the radar so you can swoop in and take me out in the playoffs.

That's Davenport's job (or whoever comes out of the Bock).

No... I see two teams that COULD beat me. Philly and Maine. And Maine would have to shake their injury bug.

Call it what you will, but all things being equal (no major injuries)... there's not a team in the Bock that is going to beat me in a series.

STEPS FOR GETTING ON THE RADAR

Step 1: Get out of 3rd place in the WC standings

Step 2: Have a pitching staff that would scare anyone

I have Carrillo and Theodore, and Avery who has more shutouts than the IL put together. We'll be fine. We're biding our time, like a rattlesnake coiled to strike.

Didn't Cali win the Brewmaster's in '86 or '87? Its not like they were a crappy team and just started to be great after the Bailout.

Fortunately for me, when I make decisions, its based on what's good for my team only. I made a decision that I thought would make us more competitive at that time, and that helped us for the future. I went for broke and crapped out on the Joe Lopez situation. C'est la vie. I've gotten 2 BLB caliber relief pitchers (draft) out of that deal and, if viewed differently, I was also able to snag a potential great player in Pete Miles (C) later in the draft. 1/2 ain't bad.

Say what you like about the deal, but to me it looks like it only amounted to one year of fun for California. The rest was spent on a 34-year old pitcher who is watching his team play from the couch, with a beer, and the ability to sign his own 20+ million dollar check for next year. Ummm....yea. I'll pass on that.

Doom and gloom is well and good, but as I have said before, I've feel I've been more competitive (and arguably more competitive than Cali) a couple years in a row now because I've had flexibility to make trades without completely depleting my minors. I've brought in winners like Nathan, Lorral, Abe and McMonies because of that flexibility. Quietly, I did make up 15 games on Philly last year after the break because of good trades. I'm only 8 back going into August this year. I've increased my # of wins every year since that 1988 trade. I understand that my performance may be the least significant piece to you but quite frankly, I believe that the deal has done more to help us than to hurt us.

I think a monkey GM could win with that team. No way Virginia is getting any GM award votes!

Question: Can a monkey GM lose with that team?

Call me what you will... but this Monkey GM built this team from the ground up.... it's packed with 23 guys that were passed on by at least 1 other team.
