-Coupled with the surprise performance of my starters, McKay has been instrumental in closing out games and has found a place as our closer for 1991. He's doing pretty well in voting so far, but just for the guys who'd like to wait until Tuesday to vote, keep him in mind.
-Campo has shown that he still has it. Having his best season since leaving Wilmington, he's been a steady force in our offense and it would be nice to see the 5-time All-Star and 2-time IL Slugger get one more showing in the All-Star game.
(OF) Takanibu Sato
.316/.410/.460, 7 doubles, 8 homeruns, 34 walks
-This future hall of fame player has rebounded from a dreadful 1990 campaign to reemerge as one the league's best leadoff hitters. After a few weeks of watching Ivan Garcia (SS) struggle as the #1 hitter this year, we made a change and Sato has been great.
-It sucks to be this good and not get a sniff of an All-Star vote because of the level of talent at 2nd base. George has bee great in Baltimore since coming over last year. I'm pretty sure he won't make the team, but I'd like to think he's deserving of consideration.
(SP) Tim Nathan
7-3, 3.12 ERA, 37.5 VORP
-Hardly ever a true 1st ballot All-Star, Nathan is the poster boy for longevity and consistency. If you can't justify him going to the All-Star game, just remember he's #2 behind Corrigan for All-Time VORP. Then you can justify a Hall of Fame bust for the man.
(OF) Loren Wallace
.421/.533/.731, 16 doubles, 34 RBI, 32 walks, 9 HR, 9 SB, 37.5 VORP
-You knew I couldn't post without mentioning him. If he hadn't gotten hurt last month, he'd be a unanimous 1st team choice, and arguably, the best offensive player in the BLB. As it stands, however, he doesn't have enough plate appearances (I'm guessing) to be considered. I'd like it to be known that Wallace has the 2nd highest VORP amongst all players in 1991 (2nd only to the ringing Doorbell), while missing 3 1/2 weeks of play. IL coaches, you know what you need to do.
$10? After a year with no All Star Game? In VEGAS? Ticket prices should most definitely be higher. I'm looking at a $40 floor. Make it happen, Commish.
But moving on, it would be a shame if Sin City had no hometown all stars this season. I offer you the following deserving would-be all star Gamblers:
LF Pancho "Refund" Perez. Leading the entire BLB in hitting. Leading the DL in hitting by 20+ points. Ranks 4th in OPS, 6th in VORP, has the second-highest DL hit total and ranks 4th in total bases.
SS Jose Sanchez. The best DL SS not named Clarence Evans. Ranks 2nd to Evans in most major offensive categories among DL shortstops. Jose is also a much better fielder than Clarence and for crying out loud, the dude's a 37 year old five-time all star who has also won 5 glove wizard awards. Voting for him is like voting for Ozzie Smith.
SP Jerry Kraft. Tied with several others for 2nd in the DL with 7 wins. Has a 7-3 record for a barely-above-.500 team and is holding batters to a .228 average (6th among DL SPs). Also ranks 6th in VORP among DL SPs.
RP Joe Jaureguy. Voting for middle relievers isn't sexy, but Jaureguy has been excellent this season. Leads all qualified DL relievers in BB/9 and K/9. Ranks 6th among qualified DL relievers in ERA and WHIP.
SIN CITY GAMBLERSsince 1990 NEW ORLEANS DUKESsince 1993
1998 BLB Champions
2000 BLB Champions
I voted for him. I really liked his WHIP. Anything under 1.00 for a reliever is a big deal for me. I like it a lot.
In fact, I make it a point to rank the stats, and not look at any names. Its how I roll.
Plus, voting based on saves or ERA is undervaluing a guy, IMO.
I'm not saying he shouldn't be voted for or isn't worthy of an All-Star spot, its just his all-around numbers just don't seem dominant enough to be that much of a lock.
Also, there are only 3 or 4 pitchers with a sub-3.00 ERA in the DL. Slim-pickins over there.

Agreed on WHIP. I don't like ERA too much and tend to ignore it unless it's ridiculously low or way too high. But there's a reliever in the IL (I think) that had a 3.00 ERA vs. someone else with a 2.00 ERA and I voted for the 3 guy because his numbers clearly showed he had one bad outing that hurt his ERA compared to the other guy. Considering he threw more innings, had more K's, and some other overall numbers, I thought it was obvious that the 3 ERA guy was the one I'd rather have late in the game.
Reliever ERA is outrageously deceiving at times.
edit: Correction. I didn't vote for the guy. He's on my list as a possible manager pick.
