The logic is screwed even if the salaries are inflated. There is no reasonable 38-year-old player in any world of baseball that thinks he is worth over $20 MM a year when he has been declining unless his name is Manny Ramirez. And by the looks of things, we have about 6 Manny Ramirez's in the BLB. Not to mention, the real Manny will end up knowing better come this off-season.
The reality is, those players don't even matter to me. I could possibly use one. Possibly. But I don't need him. There are a number of struggling teams in this league that could use the services of a Jose Llombart, for example, but not at $20+ MM a year. Unless that team just had extra bank and was not going to spend that money, it's a waste. And making that move would be equivalent to the Pirates or Royals signing Bell or Guillen, respectively. It won't help them win a division.
Now, if they were able to bring that older player for a more reasonable dollar amount cnsidering age and talent (say: $5 MM-$10 MM) then they could bring along two or three, fill out their roster a bit, give their young guys more time to develop, and suddenly those weak teams are getting stronger.
