  • Draft Pick Compensation - Sandwich Rounds

OK, here's an idea that Liquid suggested yesterday that I didn't think was possible. After playing around with it a little and getting input from a couple different people, I think we may have something that will work and hopefully make everyone happy.

    - The money for compensation would stay the same. Type A = $13mil+, Type B = $9-13mil.
    - Instead of being awarded the signing team's pick, Type A would be awarded a pick between the 1st and 2nd round. Type B would be awarded a pick between the 2nd and 3rd round.
    - Draft order for the sandwich rounds would be determined by AAV. Meaning the team losing the highest paid player would pick 1st, etc.
    - Sandwich round picks cannot be traded.

    Comments, complaints, suggestions?

If we do decide to go this route, I'd like to implement it before Free Agency starts. This means delaying the sim until Thursday because it might change how some teams approach Free Agency.

    Technical Details
    - The only downfall is the draft log will be screwed up. The 2nd and 4th rounds would be sandwich rounds.
    - To accomplish this, I'd make the draft 2 rounds longer than it actually is. So 17 rounds under the current rules.
    - I'd create a bunch of players in the draft class named "Sandwich Round". So if there were only 4 sandwich picks, I'd fill out the rest of that round with these players. I'd then release them and delete them after the draft.

    Sounds perfect.

This should benefit all teams and is best for the league's long term interests.

      Andrew,
I think this is a really good idea. It gives small market teams a chance to get up in the world, while not punishing the big teams. I really don't see a flaw with this one. Call me a fan-boy, call me a shill, call me what you like, but I'm sold :).

        Love it....let's do it!

P.S. I mentioned us still doing sandwich picks using some kind of workaround in the other post...but I think it got caught-up in between all the other crazy posts...so I'll take partial credit for the idea! :)

Great idea. I think it's a good compromise. Doesn't make teams gun shy in FA and still allows small market teams to recoup their loses. It's win freakin' win! :D

I like the idea. Teams losing players still get compensation and the signing teams don't have to give up a bunch of future picks. It's a good compromise.

So, if we don't want to change anything with our offers, we don't need to export again, right?

I'm assuming we're postponing until Thursday?

Correct. I won't be changing the league file at all.

Yes, the Rule 5 draft will still be held tonight though. I'll post a new thread.

                              Exactly!

And that was a big concern of mine. I was afraid some teams wouldn't go after the big name FA's because of the compensation issue. Now the large market teams can enjoy a true bidding war and really jack up our salaries (that's a good thing for the small market teams).

Not to sound like an antagonist, but what is Khrog's take on this? He was one owner that was vehemently against compensation. I'm curious as to what his take is on this?
