Agreed 100%. Here are the team payrolls for the 1990 season.

I mean I hate to bitch...I guess I just never realized it was this lopsided. It puts things in a new perspective. But hey...it is what it is. On to 1991!

        Mid-market power!

It's a good place to be. You're not the scumbags up on top paying everyone a gazzillion dollars, but you also get to keep a star or two.

Also, there are conflicting payroll reports. Guess it happens in the BLB too. One report has me at $77.3 MM. Not the $83 MM that Matt quoted.

End of year payroll figures can get skewed by midseason deals though. For example, that list shows Philly had a payroll of $101mil+ when we only actually accumulated $86.5mil in player expenses for the season. So, some of the teams at the bottom of the list who show really small payrolls may have in fact dumped salaries during the season making their end of year payroll figure distorted.

The figure to key on his probably team budgets, not end of year payroll. I would also argue there are ways around your budget to a certain extent as well (forcing other teams to give cash in deals to offset salaries acquired). It may be a case where a small budget team has to take a Florida Marlins approach to things and go for it every 4-5 years and then sell off everything under the sun for a couple of years to build up resources to go for it again.

Unfortunately there are a few Marlins in the BLB...and none of them are winning. Like the MLB we all know who's going to win every season...or get damn close...the teams with the cash. My main goal is to reach .500 with this team and then take over whichever big budget GM retires first to have a real shot at the trophy.

Mississippi, Hartford, Indy? They've all made the playoffs and are at the bottom of the list. It obviously makes it harder to stay at that level with a lower budget, don't get me wrong, but it isn't impossible. Your crime? Being a small budget team in the Porter with some fairly well run organizations, if I do say so myself.

If we decide to turn draft pick signing on we're definitely going to need to take a second look at the financials. The small market teams would be really screwed if they couldn't sign their picks.

I think it sounds cool, but consider me one of the people that thinks signing draft picks to "free agent" deals is one of the dumbest things existing in MLB. I wouldn't want it for this league, but I understand why people might think it would be cool to add that element.

I just don't see the real benefit, I guess. Maybe if draft picks were as sure as a free agent then I can understand the conflict of giving this sure thing an extra $2 MM over the guy who might only be an All-Star every other year. But, it doesn't work that way.

Real life has it wrong in my opinion.

Just ask the big budget teams that missed the playoffs.
And they'll surely admit it's mismanagement.

As for draft pick signing bonuses in 11, you are basically dooming all the smaller market teams to mediocrity every season if you consider that:

                                a) in established leagues most higher end free agents never make it to FA. *unless they are unsignable by a small market team

                                b) the bigger ones that do make it are either: wildly overpriced for their age, or unsignable budget wise for small market teams.

                                c) many of the small market teams will be forced (if they are smart) to either trade their top picks to the larger market teams or be forced to take players they may not prefer from the pool of lower/no signing bonus prospects. This will leave the higher tier prospects on the board for the rich teams to select at slots that are lower than they would usually go.

*If you can't build the best team possible through the draft and you can't sign the big name FA regularly why play? I know I wouldn't be interested in being the Pittsburgh Pirates and acting like a farm team for the larger payrolls of the BLB, hoping I can string enough 2nd, 3rd, 4th rounders on minor league contracts or arbitration to squeak out a wildcard.

Text sims are for fun, but losing every season is not.
