Do we have an actual rule against that? He basically gave the guy a 2 year contract, the first of which will be paid this season without him playing a game. I'm confused as to why Davenport released him.
He won't be paid any of it, will he (the '90 portion of the contract)? The salaries get paid on on a per game basis so if he doesn't play any games, he doesn't earn the salary. Same way if you sign a player during the middle of the season, you only pay the prorated portion of his salary, right?

I had money left to sign him so I just did it using my budget room. I really didnt think I was breaking any rules.
Again if its wrong, really didnt know.

Ok Brad, I just checked the rules (Lol, yes i swear I've read thru it)
Honestly dont see it anywhere. I looked all the way thru "The fair play rules" , but I have to admit I have selective reading.(U witnessed it on ur article)
Can someone show me where its at? Also, if the rule is "unspoken" by all means Clay we can reverse this. I saw an oppt to fill in the mid-reliever role and decided to sign him.
I really meant no harm

I think the biggest issue is the deal that was signed by the player includes an entire year of salary that he won't actually earn. He doesn't "know" that when making the decision to sign. For example, right now someone with budget space could offer Alonzo Gugierrez a 3 year $21mil contract (say, $9mil, $6mil, $6mil) and if he agreed to it he would actually only get expensed to that team for $12mil.
You're right, I believe, that there's no hard written rule against what the game allowed you to do, but I would consider it an implied rule. If I'm in the minority on this one then that's fine, I'll manage, but it seems to me that for the most part we try to emulate real life as much as we can and in the real world a player simply wouldn't sign a deal that included money for a season that was already over.

Agreed! Im for nixing the deal in the interest of fair play. Lol, I didnt honestly think he'd really sign for such a low ball offer.

Top it all off I thought the deal was actually for 1991 and 1992. Still have alot to learn I guess.
One thing you'll tend to notice with me is its always the offseason in Pawtucket!!! Been since mid July since Pawtucket has wheeled and dealed. Getting a little restless I guess.

I always wondered about the effects of signing someone after the regular season. I thought I read somewhere that contracts were actually paid out on a calendar-year basis. But I hallucinate frequently.

There would be an easy way to answer that. If anyone had a copy of the league file prior to the most recent SIM you could compare PAW's Player Expenses between the old file and the new file. If it went up by $1,080,000 (the 1990 portion of the salary) between the 2 versions I'd be surprised.
