I know you kicked this idea around recently, Andrew. Is this a possibility for this upcoming season, or are we looking at maybe '82? With the new financials, I think it's something we should strongly consider for as early as '81, but definitely '82.

Basically I think we need to come up with a draft pick value chart so if the pick you're supposed to get isn't there, you get a combination of other picks (or maybe a pick from next year).
I also probably wouldn't do Type A or Type B FA's. It would be maybe top 10 at each position (more for OF, SP, MR, etc) So we'd also need to find the best way to evaluate the top 10 or whatever.

Hmm...coming up with a way to evaluate these players might be tricky.

I'd like to see a system like this implemented, but, like you guys said, a way to evaluate these players is the hard part.Los Lunas Javelinas - 1978 Brewmaster Champions!

Maybe age should be considered as well? For instance, say Lacour was let go by Baltimore and inked for 15 million elsewhere. Is it fair that Baltimore gains a first round pick for letting a SP in his late 30's walk?
Maybe we should put a cap on the age? No compensation for players over 35 or over? I don't know, just thought it was something to discuss.
Some exceptions?
If the signing club?s first-round draft pick falls in the upper half of the first round, that choice is protected and the signing club loses its second-round selection instead?
If a club signs multiple free agents within the same category, its earlier pick goes to the team that lost the higher-rated player?

MLB doesn't take age into account, but it might be something to consider. I definitely think the top half (1-10) of the first round should be protected.
One thing we need to keep in mind is that draft picks in the BLB are a lot more valuable than they are in MLB. When a team doesn't get a first round pick in MLB and gets a second instead, it's not that big of a step down. One of the big reasons for this is the "signability" factor that doesn't exist in our league.
I honestly think the NFL's draft value chart is a good start but it will need to be modified for our uses. It only ranks 224 picks while our draft has 300.
It also might need to be changed so there is less variation between values. For example, if a team was supposed to lose the #1 overall pick in compensation, which is protected. Using the NFL chart they would need to give up their 2nd round pick, 3rd round pick and 5th round pick to equal that 1st pick. This seems like too much to me, but I'm curious what others think.
Maybe a simple formula we could use is that a pick is equal to the two picks in the same slot after it. So a 1st would net a 2nd and 3rd in the same slot. A 2nd would net a 3rd and 4th, etc.

Also, with us being allowed to trade draft picks, how will we handle compensation from a team that has already traded their pick away? I'm assuming it'd be as you described...
If they've already traded their 2nd away, they'd have to offer their 3rd and 4th as compensation?
Man, this gets more and more complicating...but I think with the new financial system, we're going to need it.

Thoughts on this chart?
Basically:
1st = 2nd and 4th
2nd = 3rd and 5th
3rd = 4th and 6th
4th = 5th and 7th
If a team didn't have that, you'd move onto picks from the following year.
I'm definitely leaning towards money rather than VORP. MLB ranks the players over two years, which would be too much record keeping for us. I think the money they sign for is going to be an accurate assessment of their value.
I'm thinking:
$12 million and up = 1st Round pick (or equivalent picks if not available)
$8-12 million = 2nd Round pick (or equivalent picks if not available)
Thoughts? I'm willing to put this in before we hit FA if we can come to a consensus.
