  • I don't know what Pat's uncovered, but everything I've ever read indicates that third pitch development is completely random.

Same here. It would add a lot to the game if it were somehow tied to either your pitching coach, or other players on your team with leadership abilities who could teach their pitches to young players. Or, the game could just give most starting pitchers 3+ pitches. I mean, how many starting pitchers get through college without at least a fastball, a change and a curve/slider?

I'm also reading a lot about feeder leagues creating too many stud 2-pitch SPs and not enough good 3+ pitch SPs. From my brief experience with this one draft, that sure looks to be the case. Though I can't speak for what's been happening since the feeders were introduced.

Agreed. I also think, kind of on your point about just giving them three pitches, it wouldn't be terrible if they gave people pitches that were just rated "0" or at best "2", so you would know they at least had the opportunity to develop that third pitch.

I bet Tim Wakefield can throw a slider, it's just so terrible that he doesn't dare throw it during anything other than his nephew's BP or something. So it could be rated a 0, and you would know that a young guy might get to develop that.

Not sure that made any sense.

The Scouting Director's preference when it comes to projecting the future potential of players. The projection attribute has five settings: Highly Favor Ability, Favor Ability, Neutral, Favor Tools, and Highly Favor Tools. A Scouting Director that favors ability will base players' potential ratings on what the player can already do and project what he thinks the player will become in the future. Think of this type of scout as more of a "Moneyball" scout. The director that favors tools will base the players' potential ratings on the maximum peak the player could achieve. In theory, a scout that favors tools will find more superstars, while a scout that favors ability will find more serviceable major league players.

                      Interesting.

Also, damn you Pat! I really wanted Don Bolton. Interested to see if he developes a third pitch. If so, he'll be dangerous if he can get it to even an average rating.

                      • Drafted my #1 guy. Probably not a good sign.

                        LF - Zuo-qian Zhang

Power hitting 17 year old from Taiwan. He's all 2's, but I'm hoping he'll develop into a feared power option 4-5 years from now.

                        • He was on my radar, but my scout didn't think highly enough of him for me to target him this high. I do think he could develop into a middle of the lineup guy in a few years.

                          • PICK ANALYSIS:

Washington Bats select Don Bolton (SP) - Rice University (1.18)

                            OSA Current: 4-4-2
                            OSA Potential: 5-5-4

                            What We Know:
                            - 14.2 K/9
                            - 101 MPH Fastball
                            - 29 homeruns, 29 games

                            What We Like:
                            - Doesn't walk a lot of batters
                            - Experienced and developed
                            - Above average stamina potential

                            What We Fear:
                            - He may never develop a third pitch
                            - My scout's opinion has declined since '88
                            - Mediocre personality (leader, intelligence, work ethic)

                            What We Think:

If can develop a third pitch, he is easily the best starting pitcher in the draft besides Coates. If he doesn't develop a third pitch, he is a right-handed Joe Negron. At the very least should be a very interesting prospect to watch develop.
