(Editor's Note: Going to try to do a few of these as we go along. Can't promise I'll do many, but here and there. It will be based 100% on my opinions with very little actual merit or knowledge.)
PICK ANALYSIS:
Morgantown Mohawks select Doug 'Stinger' Coates (SP) - California Golden Bears
OSA Current: 4-5-4
OSA Potential: 7-6-7
What We Know:
- 18-3 with a 2.12 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP in NCAA Career
- 7.12 Career K/BB Ratio
- 1989 NCAA Pitcher of the Year
What We Like:
- Already throws 4 pitches well and is adding an emerging change-up
- Gets wins on a mediocre team
- Advanced College player but still only 21 at the beginning of next season
What We Fear:
- Did have an arm injury. It was minor, but an arm injury before he hit 200 career innings is at least something to watch.
- OSA dropped him by one point in Movement potential between '89 and '90.
What We Think:
Coates was the pick to make. Ability. Track-record. Poise. Coates will be the first homegrown Superstar for the Mohawks. The trick will be how patient can/will management be in moving him through the system. The Great One!
To many rings to count...

No brainer pick, IMO. I fear Coates will be dominating the Stout by this time next year. He also completes the "fearsome foursome" for the division. Derrek Tucker in DC, Pancho Herrera in Virginia, Hector Pagan of Wilmington, and now Coates in M-Town, are all aces (current or future) all 23 years old and under. Clyde had a stellar high school baseball career at Westchester High School in Houston where he finished with a record of 18-0 as a senior and only three earned runs in 148 innings pitched. He was the first person selected in the 1973 MLB Draft. He received a $125,000 ($611,946 in current dollar terms) signing bonus, the highest bonus ever given to a draft pick at the time.[1]
The Rangers selected Clyde as the first overall pick in the 1973 amateur draft. Rangers owner Bob Short was looking for some sort of spark to boost attendance. In their first year after moving from Washington, D.C., the Rangers had the second-smallest gate in the American League, ahead of only the Cleveland Indians. Clyde agreed to sign a contract, but wanted to make two starts in Arlington before heading to the minors. Clyde won his first ever Major League start, before 37,000 fans—the first sellout in Arlington Stadium history. He pitched well in his next start as well, and the Rangers dropped all plans to send him to the minors. The youngest player to play in a major league game in 1973, Clyde pitched a total of eighteen games (all starts) that season, finishing with a record of 4-8, with a 5.01 ERA.

<10 minutes until Los Alamos is autopicked. Will we see an avalanche of picks after that? Depending on what happens with the very next pick (HYU), could we see the completion of the first round on day 1?Philly Freedom
