    IL Stout Slugger Candidates

    Mel 'Doorbell' Woodbury (RF)

Last year's IL Stout Slugger missed 19 games during the early part of the season, yet still managed to rank at or near the top of many IL offensive categories putting in another Stout Slugger worthy season.

    Statistic (IL Rank)

    HR - 39 (#2)

    Dale O'Hegarty (SS)

The undeniable leader of the Colonials, O'Hegarty has taken a backseat to Superstars Woodbury and Gremades and "Favorite Son" Danny Nelson, but the Shortstop quietly turned in one of his greatest seasons to next to no pomp and circumstance.

    Statistic (IL Rank)

    Everardo Gremades (1B)

After a mid-season trade that moved the '85 DL Stout Slugger to the IL for the first time in his career, his split statistics became overshadowed in big picture. But when you combine his stats from both leagues, Gremades season deserves Stout Slugger consideration.

    Statistic (BLB Rank)

    AVG - .342 (#4)

    IL Pale Ale Pitcher Candidate

    Pancho 'Ironfist' Herrera (SP)

'Ironfist' emerged as the clear Ace for the young gun rotation for the Stout Division Champion Colonials. Just 22 and completing his third full season at the BLB level, Herrera may be adding some Gold to his already impressive resume.

    Statistic (IL Rank)

    IL Last Call Relief Candidate

    Jayson McQueen (MR)

McQueen started the season as the 5th Starter but quickly moved back to his natural home in the bullpen. The 26 year old fireballer spent most of the season in the setup role, but will be the likely candidate to become the full-time Closer in '90. For now, McQueen was a shutdown 'pen arm this season in every role he played.

    Statistic (IL Rank*)

Here at Denver, we believe we have only one solid award candidate and it belongs to 23-year-old left hander, Jared Williamson.

      IL Stout Slugger Candidates

Not deserving of 1st. Nor a 2nd. But I think you have to consider Mike Murdock for a 3rd place finish. Pretty spectacular season for a catcher:

      .313 AVG, .914 OPS, 58.9 VORP, 29 HR, 120 RBI, 85 R, 177 H, 37 Doubles, Great Fielder

      IL Last Call Relief

Half the season with Davenport, half with Washington, RP Roger Simonds had one of his best seasons ever:

      71 G, 10-3, 23 saves, 74 IP, 2.19 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 25 VORP, 75 K, Great with women

      IL Pale Ale Pitcher

Really, my team MVP, Carl Pateshall. Didn't have the best second half, but still a phenomenal season. Arguably worthy of 2nd or 3rd (no one is catching Herrera in votes):

      20-5, 3.04 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 198 IP, 163 K, 49.4 VORP

I guess Martin Carlton wasn't so bad either:

      18-5, 2.85 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 177 IP, 128 K, 48 VORP

          Geoff Scott - 2B

You can’t spell IL Stout Slugger without Geoff Scott . . . ., well you can, but you shouldn’t.

          - Turned in the All-Time single season VORP rating in the history of the league, not just the IL at 104.17

          - Batting line of: .328 | .440 | .582 | 1.022

Among qualifying IL batters he ranked:

          - 4th in BA - .328
          - 1st in OBP - .440
          - 3rd in SLG% - .582
          - 2nd in OPS - 1.022
          - 1st in OPS+ - 218 - the second highest total in the history of the league (Kellum - 223 in ’78)
          - 1st in RC/27 - 10.35
          - 3rd in BB - 113
          - 2nd in XBH - 79
          - 3rd in TB - 336
          - 3rd in RBI - 125
          - 2nd in Runs - 118
          - 5th in Hits - 189
          - 5th in HR - 31
          - 1st in Off. Win Shares - 34.8 (led league, 3rd highest total of all-time)

All this while playing in the worst offensive ballpark in the league, year-in and year-out. I honestly don't like pimping players (this is the first time I've actually felt compelled to do it), but Scott turned in a season worthy of recognition.

If you compare the home/road splits of Scott vs. Woodbury, it does lead to an interesting debate.

                DL Refreshing New Brew:

Pancho Perez or Don O'Finegan. Could make a solid case for either of those guys. Perez probably gets the nod if you ask me.

                DL Last Call:

Vernon Simmonds. His resume speaks for itself and he was pretty much the only one worth a damn in my bullpen this year.

                DL Stout Slugger:

This is locked up already, but Perez might steal some 3rd place votes.

                DL Pale Ale:

Definitely not #1 on the ballot, but Parongao had a solid year for me.

Also got great rookie years from Joe Dominguez and Von Haynes (don't think he had enough AB's last year to qualify). Definitely wasn't my offense, or the rookies contributing to that offense that was my problem.

                        Owen Gilbertson (LF)

Gilbertson was the engine behind the Kodiaks offense this year. Obviously while he isn't going to win the award, I think he deserves some recognition for how good his year was. So any second or third place votes would be appreciated!

Wilkerson had a "down" year by his standards... but that doesn't mean he wasn't amazing on the mound. Wilkerson was held down by the terrible defense behind him... and an uncharacteristically high BABIP.

                              DL New Brew/Stout Slugger Candidate

                              Joe Rojas

The 21 year old who was obtained from Maine in 1986 for reliever Troy Sisk had a monster year in his debut season. He set Mississippi single season records in batting average, hits, HR, SLG, and RBI.

.316/.366/.917 with 34 HR and 116 RBI is an incredible stat line for a 21 year old rookie.

                              Among all DL players,
                              #9 in BA
                              #4 in HR
                              #6 in RBI
                              #4 SLG
                              #2 EBH
                              #2 VORP

I think he makes a strong case to be on ballots for the Stout Slugger.

I think the vote for the New Brew will be more interesting though between Rojas and Pancho Perez. Both make strong cases but I think my guy wins out.

Rojas was the center-piece of this offense for most of this season- he didn't have a ton of help around him. The Storm play in a notorious pitcher's park (.841 AVG park factor and .817 HR factor vs. Sin City 1.085 AVG and 1.046 HR). Rojas hit 17 HR and still OPS'd above .900 despite playing in one of the most extreme pitcher's parks in the BLB (along with Philly).

Now just getting to numbers, the only place Perez really has an advantage over Rojas is batting average (.332 vs. .316) but Rojas really takes it to him in every other category. Rojas has more hits (204), more HR (34 vs. 29), more RBI (117 vs. 110) and a much higher VORP (75.2 vs. 47.3). Rojas also drew more walks than Perez and had significantly more extra base hits.

                              There, that's enough pimping :)
