CHARLOTTE, NC -
While the country sits back and and awaits the 1980 Brewmaster?s Championship, a group of radio station owners in Charlotte, NC have put together an organization designed to lure an expansion BLB franchise to the largest city in North Carolina.
Play Ball '82 is an organization headed up by radio tycoon T.J. Cutini, a self proclaimed baseball purist, who's dream it is to bring a professional franchise to his home town.
"The people of Charlotte have been clamoring for pro baseball for years and years. We felt slighted when the Carolina Tobs decided not to put a minor league team here. Now, we feel like we're ready for the big time", said Cutini.
Many would consider it odd to have two franchises in such close proximity. Play Ball '82 believes that the Tobs are far enough away that each franchise would draw it's own fans.
"It's 1980. It takes a long time to drive between Charlotte and Raleigh. I-85 is only a 4-lane highway, so we're not worried about having to share fans. There are enough baseball people in our area and in the northern part of South Carolina to sustain a healthy fan base for both clubs", Cutini added.
Play Ball '82 is planning on holding a Brewmaster's Championship viewing party at their Carowinds Boulevard headquarters, the potential site of a home ballpark for a Charlotte franchise. Cutini has also partnered with the Charlotte Observer daily newspaper to announce a year-long "Name the Team" contest, should a franchise be awarded to the Queen City.
"We're doing this the right way. We have companies across Metrolina who are lining up to be a part of a Charlotte-BLB franchise", said Cutini. "Hopefully the people who make these decisions will see that, and do what's right not only for our city, but also the league."
