2-0
We won 2 hard fought games against Syracuse evening up the season record at 4-4. Not exactly the way you want to come out of the all-star break, having to use the big guns out of the bullpen 2 games in a row, but I'm glad we came away with the wins. Syracuse is looking like a potential 1st round playoff match-up and I wanted to build some confidence against them as we start off the second half.
The Good
We got Provencia back off the disabled list. He'll be platooning in LF with Headington (with Provencia taking on the RH pitchers). In 4 pinch-hitting appearances since his return he had 2 BB, 1 H, 1 RBI, 1 SB. Hopefully it continues and his injury won't effect him.
Gugs had another solid outing against a tough opponent. We got him for the playoffs and with Kraft going through some mid-season struggles, we need him to anchor the staff. Looks like he's up for it.
The Bad
Willie Copeland keeps going up and down. He's young, so it might just be too early for him (though my scout seems to think otherwise). Not too many options coming up from AAA though. Wade Burchell might be getting the call back up to the bigs to play the mop-up roll again. It will likely be Burchell's last shot, if he doesn't find success in mid-relief, we'll be looking to cut him in the offseason.
Don Bates had a promising start, but unless he turns things around in the next couple weeks, he may also be in line for a demotion back to AAA to figure things out. Lonnie Coleman would be the first choice for the call up to fill in that middle relief role.
The Ugly
As I already mentioned: 26 games in 26 days. I'm hoping that I've afforded myself a big enough lead in the division to use a 6 man rotation starting in late July with Freddie Thompson taking the 6th spot in the rotation. I'd like to see how this next sim plays out first.
On Deck
After finishing up at Syracuse Stadium we move on to the Millers and Patriots while our division rivals, Los Lunas, have a tough go as they finish up with the Guides and move on to the Slammers. Despite their struggles, Pittsburgh owns a 2-4 edge on the Gamblers this season. We look to turn that around and continue our success against Pawtucket to hopefully pick up a couple more games in the standings.
