    2-0

We won 2 hard fought games against Syracuse evening up the season record at 4-4. Not exactly the way you want to come out of the all-star break, having to use the big guns out of the bullpen 2 games in a row, but I'm glad we came away with the wins. Syracuse is looking like a potential 1st round playoff match-up and I wanted to build some confidence against them as we start off the second half.

    The Good

We got Provencia back off the disabled list. He'll be platooning in LF with Headington (with Provencia taking on the RH pitchers). In 4 pinch-hitting appearances since his return he had 2 BB, 1 H, 1 RBI, 1 SB. Hopefully it continues and his injury won't effect him.

Gugs had another solid outing against a tough opponent. We got him for the playoffs and with Kraft going through some mid-season struggles, we need him to anchor the staff. Looks like he's up for it.

    The Bad

Willie Copeland keeps going up and down. He's young, so it might just be too early for him (though my scout seems to think otherwise). Not too many options coming up from AAA though. Wade Burchell might be getting the call back up to the bigs to play the mop-up roll again. It will likely be Burchell's last shot, if he doesn't find success in mid-relief, we'll be looking to cut him in the offseason.

Don Bates had a promising start, but unless he turns things around in the next couple weeks, he may also be in line for a demotion back to AAA to figure things out. Lonnie Coleman would be the first choice for the call up to fill in that middle relief role.

    The Ugly

As I already mentioned: 26 games in 26 days. I'm hoping that I've afforded myself a big enough lead in the division to use a 6 man rotation starting in late July with Freddie Thompson taking the 6th spot in the rotation. I'd like to see how this next sim plays out first.

    On Deck

After finishing up at Syracuse Stadium we move on to the Millers and Patriots while our division rivals, Los Lunas, have a tough go as they finish up with the Guides and move on to the Slammers. Despite their struggles, Pittsburgh owns a 2-4 edge on the Gamblers this season. We look to turn that around and continue our success against Pawtucket to hopefully pick up a couple more games in the standings.

it's definitely a combination of downtime at work and actually having more to say than "we suck. we're rebuilding. when does the off-season start?"

You're just not accustomed to the winning yet. You're probably worried that you'll jinx it somehow.

With a key crucial free agent signing this week AND the return of Hard Hitting Brett Nichol....can you hear that? Yes my friends....it is almost upon us.

Should have been 0-3. My rookie closer must have been distracted by some Playmates at the Mansion when he gave up 6 runs in the 9th in game 2.

I thought 6 ER in .1 IP was fairly spectacular. Walk off grand slam doesn't move the needle for you? His ERA went up 1.40 runs after that masterpiece.

                                Virginia Colonials (51-33)

                                2-0 vs Davenport

Game 1 - 3-1 - Nate Magness was great, but he's becoming a notorious nibbler. 119 pitches (77 strikes) despite only allowing 5 baserunners (3 hits/2 BBs) in 6.1 innings. He needs to get more efficient or he'll start skipping some starts.

Game 2 - 5-4 - A so-so start for Jerry Morgan, but the bullpen was able to slam the door shut tight enough for a 7th innings Pete Collins fastball to get deposited 450 feet into deep left field by notorious pussy Everardo Gremades for the game-winning two-run shot - his first as a Colonial.

Nothing to really write home about here. You have to get those home wins against the teams that have already started selling off their assets.

                                Coming Up

Seven more big home games this week to come out of the All-Star break. We finish the series against Davenport by sending All-Star Jerry Collins to the bump.

Batavia (4-2) comes in next and gets a look at two rookies and an Ace as Ivan Olivio will take another spot start due to the long stretch of consecutive games, followed by Arlen Spencer and All-Star bench warmer "Ironfist" Herrera.

Finally, we close the week and the homestand with our final series of the season vs Baltimore (7-2). We'll throw two lefties at the Bulldogs in hopes of keeping Caballero in the park.
