  • OOTP Question

I'm a teacher at a year round school, so my track break (basically my summer break) is this month, meaning I'll have extra time for gaming. I was thinking of picking up OOTP for some leagues but I have some (haha) questions if you guys don't mind answering?

1 - is the interface better than FOF? Is the extracting, uploading, downloading and moving around in UI easier. I love following OSFL and spent the $ on FOF to play, but it was way too cumbersome and unituitive for me. Is OOTP more like BB/NCFA? I'm computer competent, but not much of a trouble shooter. FOF was a bad purchase it was too much of a pain.

2 - BLB uses OOTP10 right? Do you guys see more OOTP leagues out there or other versions? Should I wait for OOTP 11?

3 - For MP leagues there are options for real teams and fictional teams correct? What are the historical leagues - does that mean you could start up an MP league w/ 1980 rosters?

4- Do all of the options above apply to SP also? Is SP worth the price on it's own?

Ok kids, there are enough ?'s here in case you didn't believe I teach...Thanks for the input.

I'll try to answer the questions...

    1. OOTP is 'light' miles ahead of FOF in terms of interface. It's pretty much an open book as to what you want to do, and how you want to accomplish it.

    2. Yes, we do use OOTP 10. I'm not sure how many will be switching to OOTP 11, but as a league, we switch at a decent rate. As Andrew says, its harder to attract new owners when you're not playing the up to date game.

    3. Yes, there are real and historical leagues. I think you can pretty much import any year in the history of real world baseball and play with those players. You'll have to do some digging on the OOTP message boards... but they have tons and tons of mods that will let you play any period of baseball you want to. You can even set it up so players are drafted randomly through history. For example, you might see Babe Ruth drafted in the 70's or Ken Griffey Jr. drafted in the 20's... it's all up to you really.

    4. I don't play SP, but a lot of people like it better than MP. The game is amazing and very deep. If you like baseball, and text sims... I really think its worth a purchase.

I like the BLB more than any other video game I've ever played.

        1) I’m not sure I’m qualified to answer some of these since I’ve never played BB, but I do come from the unique experience of getting introduced to OOTP at an advanced “age”. The first time I ever touched the game was with version 9 which is very similar to the current version. The game can initially be a bit frustrating as you try to learn where everything is. The actual “gameplay” and team operation was easy to learn, but I don’t remember how many times I would stumble across a screen or report that I had never seen before and then be unable to find it again the next day. Once you are over the initial learning curve, I think the UI becomes second nature.

The league file updates are incredibly simple. It actually takes place in game. One link, click it and the game itself checks to see if a new file is available. Same thing with exports, one button, make your selection and your changes are exported.

        2) Yes, the BLB uses OOTP 10. We generally vote as a league when a new version comes out to decide when we will adopt the new version.

3 and 4) Yes, theoretically you could start a MP or SP league in any year with real or fictional rosters. I don’t really play SP, so others could say whether they thought it was worth the purchase.

The fun part about Single Player is that it can be whatever you want it to be. For me personally, I love the setup and the results.

So I'll spend weeks setting one up. Teams, Names, Unis, Rules, etc.... Then once I have it exactly where I want it, I'll SIM like 100 years. Then I just spend days going through the history. Learning about the great players, teams, etc. It's like writing your own book of baseball.

I haven't played my SP leagues in awhile but I'm the opposite. I run the team strictly as the GM, only making transactions. I'll set general strategy but my manager sets the lineups and rotations. I check the box scores, waiver wire, free agents, etc every day. I'll watch quite a few of the games as well.

Just to give you an idea of how creative you can get, I had a hybrid (historical/fictional) league that was running for years. It was a fictional 24 team league with all MLB teams but I re-aligned to my liking. I created fictional players at 90% of their ratings and imported about 2 draft rounds worth of real historical players using a random debut year database. These were created at 110% of their ratings. So the league was mostly fictional, but the big stars were all real historical players.

Sold. Just pre-ordered 11. I figure I'll play enough of it SP to justify the purchase. Plus it was on sale at $29.99. I must be getting old. I enjoy my text sims more than my console sports games.

BB was one of my top 10 game purchases of all time.

I'll keep you on the short list if/when a new team opens up.

The only problem I have with the BLB and OOTP is Pat. On some days he's a game-killing bug.

Still, to be fair to OOTP, this doesn't impact SP mode . . .unless Pat swings by your neighborhood and spills something on your computer.

He hasn't spilled anything on my computer yet but I have seen him looking in my windows when the sim is running late.
