4-3 sim keeps us in first place.

The starting pitching has been just terrible. Somehow we are still 6th in the DL in starters ERA. The bats were quiet this sim, but we still found our way to a winning week.

I thought Clint Underwood was going to be good, good enough that I flirted with moving Cannell, but I had no idea it would be like this. Second in the BLB in average, third in slugging, third in OPS, second in runs created/9, second in VORP (at one of the most talented positions in the league), third in HRs... the dude can rake.

Our first standout week of the month, but there are still some real concerns on this team. Our offense was particularly inept this week as we continue to average right around 4 runs scored per game. We are near the bottom of the entire league in just about every offensive category except in our ability to draw walks and avoid strikeouts where we are in the top quarter in each stat

So, how did we accomplish a 6-1 week? Pitching of course and starting pitching to be more exact. The efforts of our SP this week:

Definitely a recipe for success.

The Good

- The obvious: Starting Pitching and a sweep @ Windy City including victories over Theodore and Carillo in the last two games. I think this is the first time we have pinned a loss on Raul Carillo in the last 2+ seasons.

- Rule V draftee Raul Velez turned in a line of .333 | .412 | .667 | 1.078 with 2 doubles, a HR and drove in 5. In a week where the team hit a combined .218 | .302 | .316 | .618, that’s pretty salty stuff

- Jim Newlin also gets a plug for continuing his consistent season. .400 | .423 | .560 | .983 with a double, a HR and matched Velez’s 5 RBI

The Bad

- A lot mediocre batting lines turned in this week from guys we really depend on. I won’t name names, but we need better production out of our established veterans on a weekly basis. (I’m just going to make this a running comment until the offense “breaks out”)

MILESTONE MOMENT

Sergio Lumar Launches Himself Into History

With 2 on and 2 out in the Top of 9th inning of Indianapolis' 7-0 @ Mississippi on May 31st, Sergio Lumar moved into 1st place by himself on the BLB's All-Time HR King list with his 337th. He took the 2-1 fastball from 20 year old Zach Murphy and launched it 422 feet to deep left center. Lumar, who has been injured most of the season, passes Pedro Eires for the top spot on the list, but leads Harry Keppel by just two bombs. Congrats to Coyote on this accomplishment.

In related news important only to Clay.... Danny Nelson hit a milestone as well going deep for the 200th time in his career. The 29 year old has hit all 200 of his HRs as a Colonial and leads Joshua Poling (the active Colonial wth the 2nd highest total) by nearly 100 bombs.

California Kodiaks (27-24)
3-0 @ Los Alamos
2-2 vs. Baltimore

THE GOOD

-- Not your average Joe - Since picking up Joe Ovando as a free agent two sims ago; the man has done nothing but hit. I don't expect it to last, but for the time being he's providing a nice spark to the top of the Kodiaks lineup. I'll gladly take .364/.400/.636/1.036 each and every week out of the hot corner.

-- Someone finally paid the power bill - FINALLY! The Kodiaks bats broke out to the tune of seven Home Runs this week. That's a huge week in California.

-- Turn back the clock - Oswaldo Escarcaga, one of my favorite players and the elder member of my pitching staff went out and put up two quality starts for the week. It'll be a sad day when he no longer is wearing a Kodiaks uniform.

THE BAD

-- Protect this house (please) - While I enjoyed sweeping Los Alamos on the road, I would have rather gone 3-1 against Baltimore and 2-1 against Los Alamos rather than 2-2 against Baltimore and 3-0 vs. Los Alamos. All games within your division are important, especially games at home.

THE UGLY

-- Terrible Baseball - 9 Wild Pitches, 7 errors, 2 caught stealing, 2 HBP and numerous unturned double plays. To win, you have to play smart baseball. That's pretty much the exact opposite of what happened this past sim.

-- Magueu and Jaureguy: Dumb and Dumber - Where do I start? After fighting hard for seven straight games, I always hate to see losses pinned on one player... so I really hated to see Roman Magueu and Joe Jaureguy crap the bed and give up innings of 6 runs (Magueu) and 9 runs (Jaureguy) a piece. Jaureguy's bad inning was a double whammy. First, we had a two run lead, so he blew a save, and second due to bad bullpen management by my coach, Joe Toapanta, my starter for today's game had to come on and pitch and get one out thus burning him up for his start today. We're going to have to bring up a guy from AAA to take his place against dreaded rival Philadelphia.

ON-DECK

Start the week with two at Philadelphia, then we head back home for two against Batavia and then finally we fly all the way back across the country and head to Baltimore for three games. This is the end of our 20 games in 20 days stretch so it'll be nice to have an off day on Monday.

Do you know what Jaureguy's ERA was before this sim? It's crazy that he gives up 9 ER and only has a 4.60 ERA. His ERA must've been crazy low to start that game.

THE GOOD

-- We went 2-1 in Yankee Field (Pat you haven't changed that yet?). Should have gone 3-0, but the wonder kid, Cesaro Pena, gave up an uncharacteristic 2-run walkoff home run to Pepe Hernandez (C). I know. Who in the hell is Pepe Hernandez?


-- I'm not sure where all of this came from, maybe its the fact that he lost 100K through arbitration, but Curt Boyd has become awesome. A .485/.486/.758 with 6 doubles and 10 RBI. He just won the cleanup spot over Pat Washington. I am so glad I didn't trade him.


THE BAD

-- Philly has a 50/50 chance of winning the division right now. Looking at the standings, the wildcard will likely from the Stout. June will be a crucial month and I look forward to making a couple more changes to help our cause.

ON-DECK

-- 2 vs. Batavia, 2 @ Philadelphia and 3 vs. California. This is a big week. It has the potential to make up ground against the first place Freedom. It is also the last of inter-divisional play before the All-Star break.

I'm buried trying to tie up loose ends before my last day (4/9) so I'm not sure I'll have time to do this SIM justice.

- My favorite player - Yoritoki Maeda - raised his shitty BA by .025 points in a week

The only goals for the week that we didn't meet were (a) finanlizing a new deal with Woodbury and (b) team plane crash for Washington.

Geeze-Louise!...Going 2 - 5 is bad enough; but to do it the way we did it is PAINFUL. Up 7 - 0 against Maine in the 8th and we give up 8 for the loss. Then AI uses my mop-up guy in a save situation and we blow another game to Sin City.

If Dealba and Guardamagni ever have a good year in the same season, I might win a few games...

THE GOOD

-- Closing the door - Roger Simonds is the answer. Three saves this week, two in one-run games. Those are games that my previous closer would have blown.

-- Who the hell is Pat Daniels? - He just posted his 4th quality start in his 5th appearance. The 23-year-old rookie looks like a keeper.

-- It's nice at the top - Leadoff hitter Robert Abbott and #2 hitter Michio Nago combined to go 23/52 on the week. They have to be the best tandem at the top of any teams lineup, right?

THE BAD

-- Bullpen still needs tweaks - Blew another one-run game. One that I lead by two runs entering the 8th. Simonds has solidified himself as the closer, but the rest of the gang needs to adjust.

-- Injury bug bites again - This time, it's third basemen Mark Steward. Out two weeks.

THE UGLY

-- Power hitter? - Sergio Lumar is hitting .300 with a .385 OBP since arriving in Washington. However, he has zero homeruns. Zero. He is the BLB's All-Time Homerun leader! Get your act together old man!

The Minors

-- Top Prospect - Derrek Tucker pitched seven innings of shutout baseball, giving up just one hit, three walks while striking out seven in a 4-0 Win. A key part of the McEvoy trade, Tucker might make the jump to Triple-A here shortly.

Whoops.

I don't understand this game sometimes. My scout hated him. He sucked on my A team. Now he's a top prospect throwing 7 mph harder than he did when I had him. I know young prospects change, but I sure didn't see this one coming. I'm sure he'd have completely flamed out if I'd have held on to him, but he's destined for greatness now.
