Baltimore Bulldogs (18-14)
2-1 vs. Davenport
0-3 vs. Carolina
THE GOOD
-- Loren Wallace is for real. I was worried that April was just a fluke and he would regress a bit but that did not happen. After Takinabu Sato was injured in the field last week, we moved Wallace to hit leadoff and he responded with a .400 BA, 2 home runs, and 6 RBI. Unlike his right field counterpart, Wallace hits well in any ballpark and looks to be the best homegrown prospect I have ever had.
-- Marlon Todd impressed me again this week, hitting .357 last week and raising his average to a .284. Todd looks to have found his swing in the month of May. One thing I like about Todd, is that he does not strike out. He'll popup, foul off, hit into a double play, but he definitely gets the bat on the bal and for a developing young player, that's good to see.
-- Chad Stafford looks good. He was the only starting pitcher to log a quality start last week for us and he did it with style. Stafford went 1-0 in 2 starts with a 1.35 ERA and 9 K's. With this past week of performance, Stafford has solidified his transition to a permanent spot in the starting rotation.
THE BAD
-- Can somebody file a police report? Pat Washington's offense is missing. Washington had an MVP caliber season last year, but Washington's '89 performance has been pedestrian at best. I appreciate his new approach of patience at the plate, evident by his increase in walks and decrease in strikeouts. However, we could really use that .300 average that has dropped to just .250 so far this year.
-- Our entire starting lineup (minus Chad Stafford), is playing like trash. Quite frankly, I expected Dylan Lillie to struggle a bit this year. On the other hand, Joe Soto, Brian Hanrahan, and Bill Faircloth have no reason to be performing the way they have to date. Between these four pitchers, we've given up 14 home runs, 48 earned runs, in just about 49 innings. Last week only Chad Stafford and Bill Faircloth even made it out of the 2nd inning.
Despite this terrible pitching and rash of early season injuries, we are still tied for first place for so I won't complain too much.
THE FARM
-- 22 year old Dutch AA pitcher, Pleun Schulenberg may be a kid to watch over the next two years. He has asked to be moved to the BLB since he was in Single A, but we know he hasn't reached his potential yet. Either way, he is expected to be the heir apparent to Brian "Giant Killer" Hanrahan as the next great Baltimore closer.
ON-DECK
-- Despite trading a potential Hall of Famer to the DL, and having a power outage from one the league's better first basemen, we are still one of the more dangerous offenses in the IL. Next week, we face Virginia and Wilmington away from the "Baby Porch (TM)." For our pitching, that's actually a good thing.Last edited by Delandis; 03-25-2010, 02:50 PM.
