Barring any huge winning streaks by a few teams, here is the realistic playoff picture in the middle of August.
Ale Division:
Maine Guides 70-46
Hartford Whalers 67-50 3.5 GB
Lager Division:
Hyundai Dinos 69-47
(Next closest is under .500)
Stout Division:
Baltimore Bulldogs 71-46
Wilmington Wildcats 67-49 3.5 GB
Bock Division:
Windy City Playboys 77-39
Carolina Tobs 74-45 4.5 GB
Of these teams, Maine and Windy City have each made the playoffs twice. Hyundai, Baltimore, and Wilmington have each made it once. Only Hartford and Carolina have never made it. If the playoffs started today, Maine would have homefield against Hyundai (same as last years 1st round) and Windy City would have homefield against Baltimore (same as 1978 1st round).
I feel bad for Carolina. They have the 2nd best record in all of the BLB, made moves to get better at the trade deadline, and have won eight of their last ten. But they are still 4.5 games back and Windy City has been red hot. Plus, the Playboys get back SP Hermosa Cobellen next week, and in the middle of September they get back RF Rick Hoover and CF Kijuro Kawashima.
