  • Playoff Picture

Barring any huge winning streaks by a few teams, here is the realistic playoff picture in the middle of August.

    Ale Division:
    Maine Guides 70-46
    Hartford Whalers 67-50 3.5 GB

    Lager Division:
    Hyundai Dinos 69-47
    (Next closest is under .500)

    Stout Division:
    Baltimore Bulldogs 71-46
    Wilmington Wildcats 67-49 3.5 GB

    Bock Division:
    Windy City Playboys 77-39
    Carolina Tobs 74-45 4.5 GB

Of these teams, Maine and Windy City have each made the playoffs twice. Hyundai, Baltimore, and Wilmington have each made it once. Only Hartford and Carolina have never made it. If the playoffs started today, Maine would have homefield against Hyundai (same as last years 1st round) and Windy City would have homefield against Baltimore (same as 1978 1st round).

I feel bad for Carolina. They have the 2nd best record in all of the BLB, made moves to get better at the trade deadline, and have won eight of their last ten. But they are still 4.5 games back and Windy City has been red hot. Plus, the Playboys get back SP Hermosa Cobellen next week, and in the middle of September they get back RF Rick Hoover and CF Kijuro Kawashima.

          Oh god.

Also, it's hard to feel sorry for either team in the Bock not making the playoffs, considering they've been padding their win totals against California all season.

You're tellin me. That would come in handy right about now. Either that or a Windy City collapse. 4 game series between the Playboys and Tobs in Carolina this week. It's pretty much make or break for me.

Now I know it's easy for me to say this, but I actually like being in a league where winning the division means something.

Obviously if we expand the wild card will happen. But being that I'm old, I liked the old divisional races, rivalries, and if you were able to win your division it really meant something.

The good side of WC is that you are always guaranteed to have the 2nd best team make the playoffs.

But sports like life aren't always fair, and I think that just adds more flavor to it.

Like I said it's easy for me to say with the team I have, but I'd have the same opinion if I had the worst team in the league.

That is the most important part to me. Mostly for when we expand.

I like the current format, but when we expand a WC is going to have to happen.

I agree that I actually prefer not having the wildcard in our present state. This coming from someone who was affected by it last year! But, when we start adding teams, I think the WC will be necessary.

There is an ideal % of teams to make the playoffs that seems to be best. Football had it figured out. When the league was just 28 teams then only 8 teams made the playoffs. 3 division winners and 1 wildcard for each Conference. 8/28 = 28.5+% They added 4 teams and with that the number jumped upwards to 12/32 = 37.5%...way too many if you ask me.

The BBL has 20 teams and 4 make the playoffs = 25% so with expansion to add 4 or 8 more teams we'd be looking at the 28.5% to 33% range.
3 division leaders and 1 WC per League for 8 total playoff teams amidst 24 or 28. Anything higher gets a bit insane if you ask me.
