    Yeah today is the start of my third week and I'm already seeing results. I started the program doing all knee pushups and can do about half of them regular now. I'm also down about 10 lbs in the last month because I drastically changed my diet and started this program. I had a lot more weight to lose than Jeff did though.

      You need weights and a pullup bar or exercise bands. I started with the bands but was finding I didn't get enough resistance on pullup exercises so switched to a door frame pullup bar. I also have the Bowflex SelecTech weights that go from 5-52.5

        To follow-up on Andrew's point...having weights is a huge advantage over just using the bands. Now you can certainly go through the whole program with bands...I did the first whole month with them. but I have the biggest gains and can only go to failure using the weights that Andrew mentioned. The aren't cheap at $400, but if you're going to do this program and continue on some after the 90 days, it's worth it. For me, the pullup bar is a must if you have a door frame near your workout area.

          I just started a new Program yesterday. 15 weeks on an independent routine plus three sessions per week with a trainer. The interesting change up is that I alternate between two trainers. One week I'm with a Yoga/Pillates/Cardio circuit lady, then the other week I'm with a competitive Power Lifter doing, high weight, high volume lifting. Plus I have a pretty to the numbers diet from a Nutricianist. It's a very aggressive plan, but I've decided I wanted to go for the whole "best shape of my life" thing before I hit 40 (I'll be 37 in March).

          I'm thinking after these 15 weeks I may try the P90X just to mix it up.

            I was thinking about taking MMA/Boxing classes. They seem to get people in shape... and as long as I don't have to get in the ring to actually fight, it seems like wonderful exercise that would never be boring.

              That would be cool.

              If I can ever get into a comfortable schedule with P90X (trying again right now) and complete the thing and continue on it then I would love to take Boxing lessons. Like hardcore, real boxing lessons. I don't want to fight, but I'd like to do everything else. To me, there isn't a sport that gets you into better shape.

                I'm going to give the P90X thing a go. I found it on ebay for $60. I am looking at it like Clay: the best shape of my life thing... I'll also be 37 (in May) and I just feel like it's the time to make a change.

                Now if I can just; a) find the time to do it, and b) stick to it.

                  That's where I was too. I'm turning 30 this year and I knew it was only going to get harder to get in shape as I get older. I just made the decision that I wanted to be healthy and have been sticking with it so far.

                  As far as making the time, the thing that really helped me is to do it in the morning vs afternoon. Not everyone has the time to do this but I started waking up at 6 every day instead of 7-7:30 to work out. It was an adjustment of my sleep schedule since I'm not typically a morning person but it pretty much guarantees I get my workout in and if not I have the second chance to do it in the afternoon. It gives me a lot more energy throughout the day and when I get home I don't have to worry about working out after a shitty day at work.

                  Sticking to it is toughest during the first couple weeks. After that, it just becomes part of your routine.

                  I also can't stress enough how important the diet is. You don't need to follow it to the letter but it's very important to watch what you eat, especially portion sizes. You can get in shape without the diet but I don't think you'll see the same results.

                    Isn't it just a numbers game? As long as I'm taking in less than 2,000 calories a day, I technically should be losing weight, right?

                    If that's the case... what's stopping me from eating 1,800 calories of Oreos a day and still seeing a net gain in weight loss?

                      Diet isn't just about calrories and weight. You need to eat foods that provide nutritional value, IE protein to build muscle, fiber to help digest foods, etc. You might still lose weight if you just ate oreos but you wouldn't build muscle as quickly and wouldn't have the energy needed for the workouts so wouldn't see the same results as you would with a balanced diet.

                        And technically the diet isn't really a diet. The first 30 days is a high protein/low carb diet but by the end of it it's pretty balanced, not like one of those fad diets that are out there. The whole point is eating the right amounts of the right foods. The biggest reason I was overweight to begin with wasn't that I ate unhealthy (although I did have my vices) it's that I would eat 2-3 times more than an actual portion size.

                            Yes, technically if you eat less calories than you burn in a given day, you will lose weight. However, the how and what weight you lose (and how many calories you burn) will be impacted by how you eat. Low carb diets work because they put you into keytosys which the body, now in starvation mode, burns the fats first. That's why fad diets work on the short term. The problem is it isn't realistic eating.

                            The one thing I've learned in the past three years in my quest to get into shape and the previous success I had (losing 90 pounds). It's all about muscle. You need muscle to burn fat. You need muscle to pump you metabolism. Lean muscle is the key. And lean muscle is achieved through a moderate diet (smart eating and meals of 500 calories or less) and exercise.

                              That's what some people use.

                              I've found two great guidelines....

                              No more than 500 calories in a meal. Total.

                              And for your proteins... you want to eat 1 gram for every pound of your body weight per day. So, if you weight 200 pounds, you eat 200 grams of protein in a day. That's about 7.2 oz.
