6 - 1 All divisional wins. Went all "Jurassic" on the Dinos...4 game sweep. Managed to do it batting just .250. I'd like to think we're a good clutch-hitting team...But that would be silly.
One downer...We lost our #4 SP for 3 months. Bring on the next mediocre player!
Great week for the Brawlers. I can now enjoy my weekend.
No shit.

5-2 this sim, our first decent week of the season. It doesn’t hurt at all that we did it against two divisional opponents. Any time you can gain a couple of games in the standings is a good week.
2-1 vs. Baltimore
Gm 1: Joe Arredondo got the start and gave us 7.0 good innings, allowing 1 ER on 6 hits while striking out 5. We went up 2-1 in the bottom of the 7th on a 2 out, 2 run double by Jim Newlin (4 for 4 on the day) and handed the lead off to the bullpen, but they quickly gave it away, allowing the tying run in the 8th. It got worse in the 9th when Adam Starks and Jesus Taborga allowed 4 more runs. We went quietly in the bottom half. Ballgame.
BAL 6 PHI 2
Gm 2: Ben Irvin provided 6.1 solid innings (3 H | 1 ER | 5 K), but he didn’t stick around long enough for the decision. The offense managed to scratch out 1 run in both the 8th and 9th innings to overcome a 0-1 deficit. Chet Clark struck out 3 in the top of the 9th and was rewarded with his 1st W of the season for hit trouble. Jim Newlin continued his hot streak with a 3 hit performance.
BAL 1 PHI 2
Gm 3: Rubber match. Ray Minnoz had his 1st rough outing of the season (6.1 IP | 6 H | 6 ER | 5 BB) and that’s normally enough to spell defeat for us, but the offense came to play in this one. 5 guys had multi hit games and 4 of those guys had multi RBI games.
O.T. - 3 for 3 | 2 R
G Josey - 2 for 4 | 3 R | 3 RBI
J Seagarra - 2 for 4 | 2 R | 2 RBI
D Ibison - 3 for 3 | 1 R | 3 RBI | 2 SF
J Lukies - 2 for 5 | 3 RBI
We scored 11 runs on 15 hits. We had runners on base all day, stranding 11 in addition to those 11 that crossed the plate.
BAL 6 PHI 11
3-1 vs California
Gm 1: Great pitching matchup: Young Conan Wilkerson vs. “Old” Joe Aurillo. Wilkerson was dominant (7.2 IP | 12 K), but we did manage to scratch out 3 runs while he was on the mound. Joe Aurillo put up all 0’s for his 8 innings of work. The manager deprived him a shot at the shutout despite a pitch count of 88. Joe Alveraz allowed 2 hits in the 9th, but no real damage to pick up his 4th save.
CAL 0 PHI 3
Gm 2: Tim Nathan got back on track in this one (7.0 IP | 6 H | 1 ER | 1 BB | 5 K). The offense did just enough once again in scratching out 3 runs on CAL starter Joe Toapanta. Defensive specialist Scott Gaines picked up a rare start to rest Geoff Scott and went 2 for 3 | 2 R | 1 RBI with 2 doubles. O.T. also picked up 2 hits.
CAL 1 PHI 3
Gm 3: Another really good pitching duel in this one. Oswaldo Escarcaga vs. Joe Arredondo. Escarcaga threw 7 strong innings only allowing a single ER, but Arredondo exceeded that effort (8.0 IP | 3 H | 0 ER | 9 K). A SF by Sammy Gaines in the 6th plated the only run.
CAL 0 PHI 1
Gm 4: A real shot at a sweep here as we sent Ben Irvin to the mound and he held up his end of the deal (9 IP | 8 H | 2 ER | 7 K). Unfortunately the offense couldn’t get it done, scoring 1 solitary run when 2 were needed to keep it going. It looked like we were going to be able to get that 2nd run in the 9th when Geoff Scott led off the inning with a double and quickly made it to 3rd on a single by Dave Ibison. Runners on the corners and nobody out, only needing a run? You’d take that every time, but we failed to score Scott from 3rd and the series ended on a disappointing note.
CAL 2 PHI 1
Good:
Pitching - 2.14 team ERA this week and 4 out of 5 members of the rotation earned a W.
Joe Arredondo for the week: (1-0, 0.60 ERA) 15.0 IP | 9 H | 4 BB | 14 K
Jim Newlin - 11 hits (4 XBH) while going .458 | .480 | .667
Not as Good:
Nothing really to complain about this week. We would have loved to sweep the defending champs, but we’ll take 3 out of 4 any time.
Washington Bats (11-8)
2-1 vs. Virginia
2-2 vs. Wilmington
The Good
-McEvoy pitched eight shutout innings in a 1-0 win over Wilmington.
-MAP had a .982 OPS. Mike Murdock had a 1.131. Expecting big things from both this year.
-In a jam with injuries to the pitching staff, I called up SP Glen Barrows, who I had recently signed to a minor league deal. The 30-year-old, who had pitched only six innings at the BLB level in the last four years, pitched a very solid game: 7IP, 5H, 3ER, 2BB, 5K, ND. The Bats won the game 4-3 over Virginia.
The Bad
-Dave Robbins.
The Ugly
-SP Joe Zazueto has fallen. The 1986 IL BLB Newcomer of the Year is getting sent down. In 1986, he pitched over 200 innings, went 14-8, with a 3.00 ERA. In 1987, he had control issues, walking more batters than he struckout but still managed a 10-9 record, with a 4.34 ERA. This season, he has 10 walks in 11 innings and a 9.00 ERA. This sim, he couldn't get out of the first inning finishing with 1 out, 2 hits, 4 ER, 3 BB, no Ks.
The Injured
-I lost #3 SP Joe Rodriguez for a week this sim, but I am getting back SP Cristofor Villazon in the middle of the sim.
